Fight the Summer Slide @ Your Library

Letter from the Library Director

DRG Oct 2021 Retouched.jpg

Debra Rhodes Gibson, Library Director

St. Johns County Public Library

Even though summertime provides a fun break for kids, there is also a negative side to the time off school: the summer slide. The summer slide is a term that refers to the learning loss children experience over the months spent outside of the classroom.

Though it’s easy to write this loss off, it is actually quite substantial. In fact, children lose an average of 2.5 months of learning in just one month of summer break. This adds up quickly and can compound as the years go by. Teachers are forced to spend 17% of the new school year re-teaching material each fall.

Florida Teens Read - Check Out the New List

The Florida Teens Read program is a student-choice reading award program to determine which YA book wins the annual award as the favorite of teens in Florida. The reading list is comprised of 15 titles that have been chosen by a committee of twelve school librarians specifically to engage high school students in reading and reflect their interests as well as represent a variety of genres, formats, reading levels, viewpoints, and diverse perspectives. Students who would like to participate to select which title wins the student choice award for the state of Florida are encouraged to read at least three titles on the list. With so many great titles, it'll be difficult to vote for just one!

The mission of the St. Johns County Library Advisory Board is to advise the Board of County Commissioners in establishing, operating, and maintaining a free public library system, which will provide organized access to meet the general public's educational, informational, recreational, and cultural needs.

Mr. Sarrett, the new At-Large representative, has been a North Florida resident for over 20 years. He is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences in St. Augustine, where he teaches occupational therapy.
