STAFF PICKS : Wines for Summertime
Madison's Pick:
2016 Masseria Li Veli Valle D'Itria IGT Verdeca
Verdeca is a relatively rare white grape variety indiginous to Puglia. Verdeca has seen a bit of neglect and rapid decline in plantings - Li Veli is on a mission to bring Verdeca, among other Puglian varietals, back. If this bottle is any sign of Verdeca's potential, the future is bright. Medium weight and full flavored with notes of citrus, melon, herbs, and a bright mineral finish. This wine is absolutely delicious and also a total value.  -$23.99
Doug's Pick:
2016 Koehler Ruprecht Pinot Blanc Kabinett Trocken
This could quite possibly be from the most electric and fantastic producers in the Pfalz region of Germany. Their wines are broad, rich, and mineral driven with great agability. Where as most Pinot Blancs can be described but what they are not, this wine flips that script. The finish is long, the palate weighty, the flavors and aromas sing.    -$22.99
Patti's Pick:
2016 Terre Stregate Falanghina "Svelato"
Falanghina Sannio DOC is a highly regarded wine producing region in Campania. Bright, fresh, and a little round on the palate with yellow fruits like pineapple and starfruit highlighted by lemony acidity, this wine was meant for summer. Hints of flowers and aromatic herbs like sage give it a little something extra. This wine is a Gambero Rosso 3 glass ( Tre Bicchieri ) winner, year after year, and for the money is an excellent value. Pair with foods like cedar plank salmon or poke. -$16.99
Dave's Pick:
2016 Duc des Nauves Cote de Bordeaux
It would be almost impossible to overstate the value of this understated second wine from Chateau Le Puy. Although the proof is certainly in the pudding, it helps to know a bit about the Chateau and the region to understand its uniqueness. The chateau has been family owned and operated since the 1600's. they have never used chemicals in the vineyards nor have they ever brought outside yeast into the winery. When the rest of Bordeaux turned to new oak and modern winemaking Le Puy stuck with its cement fermenters and giant neutral oak barrels for aging. The region itself is outside of the more prestigious regions of Pomerol and Saint Emillion but the vineyards sit on the same limestone shelf that provides the quality in those more expensive wines. As a second label to the main Chateau wine, the Duc des Nauves comes from the same estate and is made with the same care and precision. The wine is sleek and silky with a distinct freshness and a seamlessly rich finish that never becomes heavy or overripe. This wine is a true head turner. -$29.99
