Happy new year! We hope 2021 is off to a great start for you. Now that the holidays are over, it's time to get back to work and back to reality... This includes facing the hard truth that the drought here in Colorado is not going away anytime soon.

Did you know 2020 finished as Denver's eighth driest year in 149 years of recorded history? Denver International Airport received less than 9 inches of precipitation last year, which is just 60% of our average annual rainfall.

If you've driven past our local reservoirs lately, like Chatfield or Standley Lake, you've seen the low water levels that seem to be dropping even faster than normal. With little new precipitation forecasted this month, it is increasingly clear that we need to act now.

Colorado Drought Conditions Persist with 76% of the State in Extreme or Exceptional Drought
The U.S. Drought Monitor currently shows three-quarters of Colorado in Extreme or Exceptional Drought (the two highest tiers in their rating system) with no end in sight.

According to the Drought Monitor, potential impacts specific to Colorado at D3 Extreme Drought include:
  • Worsening pasture conditions
  • City landscapes dying
  • Large fires
  • Fish kills
  • Grasshopper/insect infestation
  • Extremely low reservoir levels
  • Mandatory water restrictions

At D4 Exceptional Drought, additional potential impacts include:
  • Dust storms and topsoil removal
  • Large agricultural losses
  • Large recreational losses
