Practical Magic is about the Owens sisters, Gillian and Sally, who were orphaned at a young age and taken in by their eccentric aunts. The aunts, like all the Owens women for the past 200 years, have a reputation of being odd and a little witchy.
The setting is a town in Massachusetts (probably not far from Salem) and the drama begins by the towns people shunning the entire Owens family, believing that the women are responsible for every terrible (or even mildly inconvenient) thing that happens.
As adults, Gillian and Sally part ways, escaping the town to find better lives, but circumstances draw them back together. I suggest you give the book a shot if you’re wanting to read a book about witchcraft that isn’t a horror or a romance.
Practical Magic became a movie in 1998, three years after the book was published. It stars Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Stockard Channing, Dianne West, Aidan Quinn, and Goran Višnjić. If you are looking for some Halloween fun, why don’t you curl up with my Hot Toddy recipe (above) and pull up "Practical Magic" for Halloween! You can find it on HBO Max until November 30.
