Combatting Negative Self-Talk
|
The dialogue that we have with ourselves in our minds as we go about our day has been shown to impact our health, both mental and physical. As individuals facing many different pressures and stresses, many of us experience negative self-talk.
It is important to recognize that the thoughts that appear in our minds are not inherently good or bad. Still, how we choose to respond to, engage with, and hold onto them can impact our wellbeing.
- Acknowledge these thoughts without judgment
- Try to avoid adding additional meaning to them
- Let them go
|
|
While negative thoughts are inevitable, taking small steps to challenge some of the negative self-talk that we may experience in our day is important.

Creating Your Social Life in the New Normal
|
If there is one thing that has been consistent throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, it is that everything is always changing. As cases rise and fall and restrictions change, social situations can be confusing. We may not know if or when we feel comfortable saying yes to social hangouts. There are many things that may factor into these decisions.
When you are hanging out with people, consider practices that lower risk of transmission:
- Wear a mask
- Stay outdoors
- Keep space well-ventilated
- Get tested before and after
If a safe opportunity comes up that you feel comfortable with, say yes! Being with friends and family is important for our well-being. Just remember to practice COVID-19-safe protocol when possible!
On the other hand, if any negative feelings arise, say no! There is no shame in setting boundaries and saying "no" when you are not comfortable with socializing.
It can be difficult saying "no" to our friends and family. Instead:
- Suggest hanging out virtually
- Communicate honestly and directly
- Avoid shaming others for making different choices
- Acknowledge your own feelings and understand that you must take care of yourself
