Sworn in as a CASA volunteer just 8 months ago, Pat wanted to make an impact on the lives of children under court protection.
Pat was assigned to his first case, 16- year old Nick*, who had been removed from his home due to abuse and placed into foster care. While Pat is fairly new to the CASA role, he finds the role to be crucial to the community.
"The big piece I see is a consistent adult, building a relationship. They are someone they can count on for support every week," said Pat.
Nick was reluctant to talk with Pat at first but together they discovered shared interests and activities. Pat connected with Nick by showing up on a regular basis and showing a genuine interest in Nick’s life including playing basketball with him every visit. Pat recognized that it would take time to build trust between the two of them.
When asked what his advice to others who may be considering becoming a CASA volunteer was, Pat stated "Volunteering with CASA is an eye-opening experience that allows you to gain so much empathy, passion, and realize the potential for these kids. You can be a small piece to getting resources for a child and providing a consistent presence for them. It can be hard and uncomfortable at times, but you don't need to be an expert in the court system, you just need to be there for the child."
Thank you, Pat, for the incredible difference you are making!
