Sanctuary Palm Springs Newsletter
September 2019
From our Executive Director:
It’s been another packed and productive few months at Sanctuary Palm Springs. Our house is still full, all of our residents are working and/or enrolled in classes, and we continue to explore options for expanding.
Before I talk about some of our exciting recent developments, I’d like to share a story that illustrates just how vitally important our services are. One morning in June, a man stepped out of his house on his way to work to find a young man sleeping on his front lawn. The young man had been living with a local foster parent and on the day he turned 18 she very unceremoniously (and illegally) dumped him at Sonic Burger. He didn’t know where to go so he went to a friend’s house and simply went to sleep on the lawn. That’s when I got the call. We knew we would have a room at Sanctuary opening in a week or two, so in the meantime, we were able to connect the young man to two wonderful local residents, Sir Rob Morrison and Will Cook, who generously allowed the young man to sleep in their casita until we could accept him at Sanctuary. He moved in with us two weeks later and he is thriving! He no longer has to worry about where he’ll sleep or how he’ll eat. He is currently enrolled in classes at COD and has set his sights on attending law school. And Sir Rob and Will continue to act as his mentors. THIS is why Sanctuary Palm Springs exists!
Now for those exciting recent developments… Please check out our new and much-improved website where you will find a ton of great information about Sanctuary Palm Springs.
sanctuarypalmsprings.org.
Our website now houses numerous resources for LGBTQ youth, their caregivers, and advocates. You can also meet our staff and board of directors. And in a very exciting addition, LGBTQ transition age foster youth can now apply to be Sanctuary residents directly from our website.
We are really thrilled with our growth and our ability to help LGBTQ transition age youth in foster care find their way safely to adulthood. And we could do none of it without the outpouring of love and ongoing support we continue to receive from our wonderful local Palm Springs community.

Because pictures really are worth a thousand words, we have posted some new videos to the site. With funding from the Kaiser Foundation we were able to hire local promotional filmmaker and producer Dean Minerd who, with his stellar crew, spent three days interviewing staff and residents about the organization. The videos also show the stunningly beautiful home this community put together for our residents! Just what our program means to them comes through loud and clear. (You might want to have some Kleenex handy when you watch.)

And please check out
Ellen Wolf’s
brief explanation of all the ways local community members can support us in our work with LGBTQ transition age foster youth.
Because so much financial support for Sanctuary has come from generous donations by countless community members, we want to be completely transparent regarding our financial information. So even though we were not required to do so, we engaged the services of Lund & Guttry to conduct a thorough audit of our finances for 2017 and 2018. They, with support from the accounting firm Maryanov, Madsen, Gordon & Campbell, completed our audit and gave us a clean bill of fiscal health. Our
financial statements
have now been posted to our website.
