A Note from our Executive Director

Dear friend,

I have a confession to make. IVYP is committed to diversity, multiculturalism, and anti-racism. Yet, we have not always done the best job possible in honoring February as Black History Month. This year it’s different. I am so pleased and proud of the work our teachers are doing in both our Children's Center and in our Afterschool programs to honor black history in America.

This summer, our staff participated in anti-bias training. Our board has been actively working on advancing an agenda of racial justice. It’s easy to say the right words, but it can be hard to take meaningful action. As an organization that works with children, we have the opportunity to really talk about race and celebrate diversity early on in childrens’ lives. I am proud of the commitment of our staff, and our board, to do the work required to build a truly diverse, equitable, inclusive, and anti-racist organization.

IVYP is committed to continuing this work year round. Black history month is a good reminder, and this is a critical component of our organizational culture and values. I hope you enjoy the stories below highlighting our teachers’ work this month.

Black History Month Classroom Highlights

"We read a book called 'The Colors of Us.' and as a class we talked about how we all have a different skin color.  The children had a great time finding their skin color and loved noticing that everyone had a different color." Amber F., Lions teacher

"This week we learned about Selma Burke and Chakaia Booker who are female African American Sculptors and made our own sculptures out of clay. Last week we learned about Garret Morgan and his contribution to stop lights and did a stop light craft. And we also have studied Mae Jemison, who was the first African American woman in space and we made rocket ships and talked about space." Carrie B., Cubs teacher

Local Fitness Studio Selects IVYP as NonProfit of the Month

RiseUp Fitness has selected IVYP as their February Fundraiser. They are engaging their members in collecting gift cards from local businesses to support IVYP families that are in need during this difficult time. RiseUp is a local gym that has created a fully outfitted space outside to provide a safe workout for their members. RiseUp provides group-based workouts for all levels that blend low-impact cardio and varied strength work. Thank you RiseUp for your support and partnership.

IVYP Welcomes Four New Board Members

Four community members have been added to the Isla Vista Youth Projects Board of Directors. Laura Duncan Wilgus, Richard Kim, Sal Robledo and Max Rorty have joined the board at a key point in our organization's history.
“I’m so excited to welcome these four new members onto our board. Their fresh perspectives and commitment to social justice will help IVYP to meet our strategic goals,” said Lori Goodman"

Harvest of the Month

Each month we share a healthy, easy and affordable recipe to try that highlights ingredients you can get at our food distribution. This month we are highlighting lettuce. Many varieties of lettuce are in season during the winter which makes now a great time to enjoy lettuce focused recipes. Lettuce is one of the most widely consumed vegetables worldwide, but its nutritional value has been underestimated. Lettuce is low in calories, fat and sodium. It is a good source of fiber, iron, folate, and vitamin C. We love these chicken lettuce wraps as a quick, easy and healthy weeknight recipe that the whole family will love!

IVYP needs your support as we work hard to support our community in the wake of COVID-19. We’ve stepped up and we need your help to continue. Please consider a donation to IVYP’s COVID-19 Response Fund to help us continue to provide the caring, proactive and flexible support our community needs.
Be a diaper champion by sponsoring the cost of diapers for local families. Diapers are one of the most consistent requests from our families at our FRC. Disposable diapers can cost as much as $100 per month per baby so every contribution makes a big difference.
Did you know that many of our most vulnerable students don’t have a dedicated place at home to do their school work? IVYP will purchase and distribute folding desks to any GUSD student who has a need through our new Study Table Fund. To support this effort click here to donate.
