It's never too early for college planning

It's never too early for college planning

The available time to attend college is open to all students and families. What matters is how to make the most of it to align with your goals.

Using the 2027-2028 academic year, the following chart illustrates a three-step approach for maximizing college planning. (except for choosing a college for the freshman year.) Steps one and three should then be performed annually for the remaining academic years.

1. Financial Planning

Twelve months available to seek tax advice, defer or shelter income, and understand how family tax savings can affect financial aid. These numbers are then imported into the FAFSA. They can be modified if appealed to an officer of financial assistance.

2. Evaluation

The nine-month college evaluation is conservative and can begin well before this date. Be open and fair about your choices and ability to pay.

3. Decision Making

The seven-month decision period allows students and their families to evaluate affordability, consider appeal awards, and investigate alternative college pathways. These straightforward steps offer the essential information. Admission decision dates vary by college.

Twenty-eight months may have been much longer than anticipated, so take advantage of it.

Students and parents are responsible and recognize that a good education doesn't have to be expensive or stressful as long as time is used wisely.

“As a retired Boston Police Officer, I worried that college for my son would be very expensive and leave him with many student loans after graduation. Howard seized every opportunity to save us money and coached us through the complexities of applying for and maximizing our financial aid package. We are forever grateful for his help.”
