Annual Meeting
Dear people of Ascension,
It's not all about the annual meeting at present. Please do read about other happenings and invitations below. But first, as you'll see in what follows, annual meeting prep does require quite a bit of newsletter real estate.
Most details and materials for Sunday's meeting received a good review and were finalized at a staff and clergy meeting this morning. I encourage your participation and offer the following in hopes that you'll be joining in an efficient, informative and meaningful gathering.
Please click here to preview the Annual Report. It includes the proposed agenda, profiles of those nominated for warden and vestry member positions, ministry and program reports and the treasurer's financial report. Your familiarity will allow for a good use of our time during the meeting itself. (I regret that, mostly due to a delay on my part, the report was not also available last week.) Paper copies will be available at the meeting.
-
Please take the meeting participation survey (whether taking part or not, whether in person or via Zoom, but especially if you will be in-person and want lunch!) This is the same survey as shared last week; and the link works! If using the same device, you may return to the link and revise your answer(s).
-
If you will be Zooming, please log on at Noon for instruction and give our tech crew time to register your participation and answer questions. If you are new to Zoom or will be using a non-smartphone telephone, this Ascension-Zoom overview may be of help.
- Please see pages 4-5 in the annual report for proposed in-person and remote-participation protocols and a few limitations (for approval at the meeting itself).
What about lunch? George Pineda and Cheryl Peterson have kindly agreed to prepare box lunches. They will be available in one or more locations that will be announced during the mass and may be eaten in Wheeler Hall, the parish house hallway or St. Michael's Hall (hoping for and requesting appropriate social distancing).
What about masks? Masks are to be worn by all participating in person at the annual meeting, after lunch is consumed and no later than when the meeting is called to order. Those with exposure concerns during the ''lunch period' may remain in the church proper, masked. Replacement air (as it is known) is well-supplied in St. Michael's Hall by way of a large-capacity exhaust fan that will run during the meeting.
An 'Open Mic' opportunity toward the end of the meeting allows for comments or questions. Any participant, whether in person or via Zoom, will be able to participate. Comments will be limited to one minute, or longer at the discretion of the meeting chair ...
No Rector transition report is included in the annual meeting agenda. This is because there is little to report at this time. The wardens, staff and I have discussed one or more open meetings in February to provide information as it becomes available. Stay tuned.
How long will it take? Annual meetings have been between 75-90 minutes during my years at Ascension. I'm aiming for that window again and believe it is realistic unless there are floor nominations for the warden position or any of the several vestry seats, in which case time will be needed for both online and in-person balloting.
I'm looking forward to a positive meeting Sunday and thank you in advance for your participation and prayers.

While no longer making news headlines, the world is still in the midst of a refugee crisis. In the last few months, Illinois has welcomed more than 1,400 Afghan refugees. I’m taking some time to learn more about our new neighbors, which I pray will help me provide a warmer welcome. I have three learning opportunities to share with you.

Join the Conversation:
Anglican and Episcopal? Anglo-Catholic?
Last week we explored the history of Anglo Catholicism and its origins in the Oxford movement. This coming Monday, February 1, we will explore the future of Anglo Catholicism in our own time and what one scholar calls The Oxford Movement 2.0.
Our conversation takes place again via Zoom at 7:30 pm. All are welcome, even if you haven’t been able to attend all (or any!) of our sessions so far.
Need a reminder about this series? Read on ...
Have you ever wondered what makes Ascension Anglo-Catholic? Or why we call ourselves an Anglican-Episcopal church? Beginning Monday, January 10, Fr. Bob Petite and Mtr Murphy-Gill will host a series of conversations about Anglican identity. We’ll explore our roots in the Church of England from the time of the Reformation, the establishment of the Episcopal Church in the United States, the influence of the Oxford Movement from across the pond, and the growth of Anglo-Catholicism in America. We’ll discern together how this history has shaped our particular Anglican-Episcopal corner of Christianity, its liturgical, theological, and spiritual expressions, and how we can live more deeply into this identity today.
Please join us via Zoom on Monday nights at 7:30 pm.
We'll end around 8:30 p.m. with Compline.

People of Ascension,
In discussion with Mother Murphy-Gill, we are considering aiding The Chicago Help Initiative's outreach program by preparing bagged lunches on Tuesday evenings at 7pm. This will begin as a once a month opportunity and may increase in frequency depending on parish interest. If you are interested in helping please full out this form
Many Blessings,
