Local APF Chapter Event Showcases
Strong Michigan-Israel Medical Connections
Even with a growing number of regional APF chapters across the country, we can be proud that, consistent with so much national Jewish leadership arising in Michigan, the most active chapter of this premier organization promoting medicine in Israel is in southeast Michigan.
The event featured three esteemed leaders:
- Robert Folberg, MD, Founding Dean of the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine
- Ora Hirsch Pescovitz, MD, President of Oakland University
- Jack Sobel, MD, Dean of the Wayne State University School of Medicine
These physicians gave individual talks and participated in a panel discussion about their personal involvement and their institutions’ ties to Israeli medical institutions, which included a lively audience Q+A.

The APF Paul R. Scherer Memorial Fund
It is with profound sadness that I announce the death of an esteemed member of the APF family. Dr. Paul R. Scherer passed away in September in San Francisco. Dr. Scherer, who worked with APF since 1986, made significant contributions to podiatric education in his 40-plus-year career. He authored numerous scientific articles and was a sought-after national and international lecturer. Dr. Scherer played a lead role in the advancement Podiatric Medicine in Israel as a project director at Hebrew University Hospital at Hadassah Ein Kerem. In 2012, he was nominated to be the first non-M.D. President to serve on the APF Board, where he served for two years. He survived by his wife Anne, three sons, David, Michael and Jeremy, and five grandchildren, Random, Arkadi, Scarlett, Oren and Clementine. He was loved by his nephews and niece, Robin, Gavin and Hilary, and by an extended loving family in Nova Scotia.
With pride but also sadness, APF announces the establishment of the
Paul R. Scherer Memorial Fund
to continue his commitment to medical research and to Israel.

The International Multidisciplinary Program for Emergency and Disaster Management was established at Tel Aviv University in 2011 with the aim of providing the graduates with the knowledge and skills required to effectively deal with emergencies and disasters and their consequences.
The 10-month program enables students from all over the world to study in Israel, gain knowledge and competence in emergency preparedness and management, and learn from leading experts as their lecturers and faculty
.
The master's program has three major goals
:
- To impart the academic knowledge and the operational and theoretical analysis skills required when dealing with emergency and disaster situations.
- To develop new, innovative and critical ways of thinking when examining intervention plans for dealing with emergency and disaster situations, as well as the ability to transform these plans into action.
- To provide the knowledge and hands-on experience to develop the skills needed for dealing with diverse types of emergencies and disasters, using tools and skills for capacity building, management, organization, evaluation, and analysis of such situations.
