What Our Guests Have to Say...

We want to tell you how much we appreciated our stay this last week in Deadwood. The primary reason was your staff. We have and still travel a great deal nationally and internationally and by far your entire staff have been the most helpful, professional and friendly staff of anywhere we have stayed. This includes everyone, deck, cleaning, breakfast and maintenance. I wish I could name them all but unfortunately I only have a few names that I got and can recognize. Special thanks to Bob, Christian, the cleaning and breakfast staff. We truly thank you all for a wonderful stay.

Sincerely,

Gary and Diana

Way Back When in Deadwood...

Homestake Mining Company

Old Smokey hauling train of cars to the dump, 1908. Deadwood History, Inc., Adams Museum Collection.

The Homestake Mining Company’s first means of haulage was using horses and mules. In 1889, there were seven horses and 15 mules working in the mine. By 1903 there were 90 animals underground. Homestake stopped using animals for transportation in 1908, retiring the last 17 animals.
