Happy Earth Day Everyone!
Did you know that April 22 marked the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day? 🌎 The Halifax Beautification Committee is so sad that we had to cancel Annual Halifax Spring Clean Up event which was scheduled for this Saturday 4/25.
|
|
We hope to reschedule in the fall! Special thanks to our generous local community banks North Easton Savings Bank and Rockland Trust for their generous donations which we will use for t-shirts/supplies at our next event!
It has been very uplifting to hear of individuals, families and groups that are "doing good" and picking up litter in their neighborhoods on their own accord. If you do so, please use extra precautions, including gloves. THANK YOU!! Stay safe everyone!
Please "share the love" by adding your clean up pictures in the comments below. Feel free to email the committee at
Beautification@halifax-ma.org.

Historical Tidbit:
Observation Tower
I find myself watching the renovation work at the Town Hall every time I go by. Pleased that the town voted to spend the money to reside and paint this grand old building.
As the weeks went by I grew concerned as to whether or not the observation tower would also be refurbished and was glad to see the workmen finally up there putting in new windows.
For those who don’t know about this “tower” it was added to the roof of the Town Hall in 1942 during the Second World War. As the name implies it was built so that town residents could take turns watching for enemy planes.
There was a vote at the March 1942 Town Meeting to instruct the Town Clerk to extend to the citizens of the Town of Plympton a vote of appreciation for their help as observers at the tower.
I can recall my neighbor, Hilda Thomas, telling us of how she would take a lunch and binoculars and climb to the tower taking her turn watching for the enemy. We can only imagine how frightening this time must have been for the resident’s back then.
I can not recall any mention of a sighting, but I’m sure just the fact that there was a way to watch and be ready made the inhabitants feel safer.
The cost for this tower:
- E. W. Harlow & Sons, building tower $486.81
- Meserve Electric Co., installing wiring $39.80
- C. F Jordan, installing furnace pipe to tower $35.11
- Roland Minott, damage to glasses $12.00
- Bernice Wadsworth, advertising bids for tower $9.00
- Saunders Hardware & Paint Co., rope $8.05
- Total: $590.77
[Appropriation $650.00]

Taunton River Watershed Association (TRWA) is looking for a volunteer to help with their Calendar Photo Contest
Needed: A volunteer to take over the coordination of entries for our yearly photography contest. This is a job that can be done remotely on your own schedule, but would require some dedication as the workload is variable. Most of the work occurs in the month before and the week after the entry deadline. All told, it amounts to about forty hours of work from the beginning of July to the first week of August.
Responsibilities would include:
• Checking email correspondence for entries and inquiries
• Download all entry photographs
• Send confirmation emails
• Correspond after the judging with the entrants and send appropriate win/lose notifications
Cool benefits include corresponding with an amazing group of nature photographers and getting to view over 400 amazing photographs of the Taunton River Watershed.
If interested please fill out the
Volunteer Form. They look forward to hearing from you.

It's the Climb.
"Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it." ~ Michael Jordan
“The climb might be tough and challenging, but the view is worth it. There is a purpose for that pain; you just can’t always see it right away.” ~ Victoria Arlen
"First I shake the whole Apple tree, that the ripest might fall. Then I climb the tree and shake each limb, and then each branch and then each twig, and then I look under each leaf." ~ Martin Luther

We together, we have stepped into a cavern, it's dark and we don't really know how to proceed. So we listen for direction, we listen for wisdom, and we wait.
Slowly a light will shine into the cavern, like dawn, the space illuminates as the sun rises.
And then we will look around with wonder and realize see our foothold, our hand-placement...
and we can slowly climb.
Cautiously, with thoughtful placement, we climb.
Those that dart up the rock wall, will likely fall back. We want to move forward... upward to solid ground in the sunlight. We want everyone to come out. We want everyone to be able to get out, together.
It's the climb. We can do it, together.
~ Jacquie
