A Week Filled with New Experiences
In the first week of Freedom School, scholars learned cheers and chants, participated in Harambee! , spent time in their Integrated Reading Curriculum and expanded their horizons with engaging on-site activities and field trips! Take a look below for some highlights.
A Day of Exploration
The Oakhurst Level I and Level II scholars explored the world of science and technology during their trip to the Discovery Place. Through learning and experimentation, the Explore More Life Lab helped scholars discover the hidden wonders of biodiversity. In this hand-on lab, scholars touched starfish in an aquatic tank, viewed animal cells through microscopes and examined insects and reptiles up close.
Standing on the Shoulders of Giants
Ella Baker ; Civil Rights and Human Rights activist (honored through CDF's Ella Baker Child Policy Institute ); Marian Wright Edelman, Civil Rights and Human Rights activist and founder of Children's Defense Fund ; and Mary Nell McPherson , Executive Director of Freedom School Partners since 2004 and child advocate, are a few of the trailblazing women that have made Freedom School what it is today. The scholars at Marie G. Davis along with scholars across all eighteen sites learned about historical figures during their Standing on the Shoulders of Giants activity earlier this week. This activity consisted of scholars going around their classrooms to read, write, discuss and share information about Freedom School Giants.

Setting Up for Success

Volunteer, Lourdes Thorn, knows first-hand the anticipation and excitement that new SLI's face before starting Freedom School. During Site Set Up, Thorn helped Taylyn Shipp, a Servant Leader Intern (SLI) for Level III scholars at Martin Luther King, Jr. Freedom School, setup and decorate her classroom. Thorn is the mother of Taylyn's boyfriend, Isaiah Thorn, and also Shanele Thorn, a former SLI.

As Thorn helped Taylyn decorate her classroom, she reflected on her daughter's Freedom School experience and even remembered Shanele's classroom decorations! Thorne said Shanele’s scholars still remember Shanele and some of their parents keep in contact and send updates letting her know how great they are doing.

Shanele first attended UNCG as a pre-med student until she changed her major when a professor introduced her to Freedom School. She was a SLI for two summers in 2015 and 2016. Shanele resides in Charlotte and plans to work within Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools with the guidance of her 5th grade teacher who is also her mentor.
