Level Up Your Game Email Header.png

Athletes -

I can't believe the season is almost coming to an end! What a great opportunity to dig in, focus on what's in front of you, and find 1-2 ways each day to make yourself and your teammates better!

In this week's Level Up Your Game email, I've got three quick thoughts for you and how to find these 1% improvements as you Level Up through the end of your season. Each thought is centered around a short video clip that's about one minute in length. I'd encourage you to read each thought and watch each clip to maximize your potential!

And if you really want to Level Up your game, take the link to each of these videos and share it with your teammate(s) that need it the most! Better yet, you could forward this entire email to your team so you're all on the same page.

Also, please reach out and let me know if there's anything I can do to help you out down the stretch this year.

I'm on your team.

Matt

P.S. I've have a YouTube video on improving your offense with ball movement that you must watch. I didn't want you to miss it, so I wanted to mention it here. If you scroll to the bottom of this email, you'll see an image you can click on that will take you directly to it as well!

1. Leading Different Types of Teammates

On your team, not every teammate has the same personality, nor do they all like to be led the same way. If you're going to maximize your leadership and influence on your team, you've got to determine your approach to leading each individual teammate. Also know that your leadership style may need to adjust depending upon the situation.

Here's a video from LeBron James and his thoughts on being able to have different forms of leadership.

2. The Power of "One More"

The end of a season is typically the most overwhelming time of year for any player. Not only do the games begin to mean more (determining playoff spots, the one-and-done nature of the playoffs, etc.), but there are also a lot of other things pulling your attention and emotions in different directions. Things like homework, family relationships, personal relationships, a part-time job, college applications, etc.

Yet in the midst of everything you have going on, it's important to continue to put in extra work on your game outside of just practices and games. Whether it's getting up early in the morning, staying late after practice, or saying no to social events, there's a decision to be made to put in the extra time necessary to be your best when it matters the most.

I love Skylar Diggins-Smith's mindset of "one more." Instead of feeling overwhelmed with all the extra that you have to do, focus in on "one more." Can you get in "one more" workout this week than you did last week? When you stay after practice, can you stay long enough to get in "one more" set of 10 3s?

Watch this video as Skylar talks about this mindset and more.

3. Overcoming Adversity & Handling Disappointments

It's inevitable. There will be disappointing moments during the season. You'll lose games you should have won, you'll go through a losing streak, you'll play less than you know you should, or you might lose a heartbreaking game in the playoffs.

How you deal with these obstacles is what will you define you as a player and as a team. Anyone can "droop" or get down when adversity hits, but can you Level Up and show how special you really are by staying true to the process and finding ways to turn the adversity into an opportunity for growth? I know you can and I hope that's the decision you make this season!

Here's Texas (and former Texas Tech) head coach Chris Beard talking about handling adversity as a team during the season.
