Tree removal along Highway 60
near Lake Crystal begins
March 12 in preparation for construction
Motorists are advised to use caution on Highway 60 near Lake Crystal starting Wednesday, March 12, weather permitting, as workers begin removing trees in preparation for construction this spring, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
The tree removal will have little impact to traffic. However, motorists should remove distractions and be aware of workers in the area until the completion of the work late this week. The work needs to be done early in the year to prevent protected bats from making their homes in the trees.
The tree removal is preliminary work for the Highway 60 Lake Crystal construction project. The project will include reconstructing Highway 60 from west of the south junction with Blue Earth County Road 20 to east of Lakeview Road, utility replacement in coordination with the City of Lake Crystal, and adding a westbound median acceleration lane at Main Street. The project also includes constructing a pedestrian trail along the south side of Highway 60 from Cemetery Road to Lakeview Road, bridge repairs, access modifications, and updated lighting.
Construction for the project is anticipated to begin in mid or late April and continue until fall 2025 with traffic detoured during construction. All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather dependent and subject to change.
Benefits of the project include enhanced safety for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclist, improved traffic flow, smoother pavement, and accessibility. Mathiowetz Construction Company was awarded the project with a bid of $18,365,360.26.
