They say it takes a village. And after Hurricane Helene hit the Florida coast and barreled into North Carolina, the people of the village gathered in support at Clover Hill Winery in Breinigsville.
Kari Skrip’s six-year-old son, Levi, was the inspiration behind the donation drive on a beautiful October weekend, a very personal effort for the winery with Kari’s North Carolina in-laws becoming victims of Helene.
A true businessman, Levi operated a watermelon stand at the winery over the summer. When he suggested bringing back the concept to both collect cash donations and thank donators with a slice of watermelon or glass of grape juice, Kari agreed.
When Kari put out the word asking for help to support her family’s hard-hit community in Burnsville, North Carolina, outside of Asheville, the donations poured in.
People brought food, water, and other supplies by the bag, box, and pallet. A friend offered the loan of two tractor trailers. Franklin Hill Vineyard of Bangor added a box truck. And topped with Clover Hill’s own box truck, a convoy of love and support came together for the victims of Helene.
Even though the storm passed, and lives, homes, and total communities are lost, the threats remain from disease, looting, lack of power, and the arrival of cold weather. Western North Carolina will be in need for a very long time.
Anewalt’s Landscape is committed to helping the victims of Helene and Lori Anewalt plans to support her sister, Kari’s, family, with an opportunity at the Anewalt’s Harvest Fest on October 25th. An unveiling of Spirits by Clover Hill will be onsite, and tastings will be offered for donations toward further hurricane relief.
“I was deeply moved when I spoke with the Gavenus family about their home and surroundings in Burnsville. The stories, the destruction, the power of water,…moved me to tears. Even so, the family has hope in their heart and is sharing that hope through their works with the families in Burnsville. Now that is community!” – Lori Anewalt
