Staying Connected with the Temple Sholom Community

23 January 2026 ~ 5 Shvat 5786 ~ Parashat Bo

Chaverim y'karim ~ dear friends,

With great joy, I share with you the recent wedding of my son and my new daughter-in-law: Eitan Strauss-Cohn and Robin Kopf this past Sunday, January 18th. The very happy couple lives in Los Angeles and we had a fantastic weekend there - celebrating the two of them plus our respective families coming together. Pictured above are Eitan and Robin carrying torah last Shabbat morning of their aufruf. While there were many highlights of the weekend, this photo beautifully captures their joy. The Shabbat morning service was filled with multiple guitars and song-leaders as Eitan and Robin met as song-leaders at URJ Camp Newman in California in 2017. As you can imagine, there were a lot of voices leading, myself included for a few songs. The wedding, itself, on Sunday was performed by Rabbi Jackson Mercer, who was the head song-leader that summer, and I had the distinct privilege to be “just” abba/dad. And a very proud one at that.

Another time, I would only be too happy to share with you more details, photos, and specifics but suffice it to say, Amy and I are flying pretty high right now as we now each have a married child and our family continues to grow.

I will be away from temple until the week of February 1st. Rabbi Jon Haddon is on call for me while I enjoy some vacation and Barbara Kessler will be leading services tonight at 6:30pm.

With all the flying, I have plenty of articles to share (see below)! God knows there is no shortage of what to consider that impacts our Jewish world and lives intimately.

The blessing we say upon hearing good news is: Baruch atah Adonai, blessed are You, Source of Life, haTov v’haMeitiv, the One who is good and who brings about goodness.

For all that is good and for the goodness that God has brought to me and my family, I am grateful and happy to share!

Shabbat shalom & may everyone stay safe with the snow's arrival later in the weekend,

Rabbi Mark Cohn

"Fearing Islamism is no phobia" (22 Jan 2026) by Rachel Wahba in The Times of Israel Blogs. As I wrote last week, the uprising in Iran is one to watch closely. We have much to learn from women like Rachel, an Iraqi-Egyptian Jew. Make sure to check out the Foundation for Defense of Democracies visual aid on their website to see in nearly real-time what is happening on the ground in Iran. Relatedly, see: "An appeal to Jews: Stand with the Iranians" (16 Jan 2026) in The Times of Israel by Roya Hakakian and Yossi Klein Halevi.

"King David is trending in Christian pop culture. Here’s why Jews should join in" (17 Jan 2026) by Rabbi David Wolpe in The Times of Israel Blogs. Whether you are coming to (King) David because of someone else's interest or your own ... he is ours and one of our greatest leaders - in no small part because of his humanity.

In case you missed what has happened over MLK Day, there has been an attempt to hijack the day from its highest teachings from Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Rather than focusing on the accomplishments of civil rights and the need for shared work by diverse populations, MLK Day is turning - in some locales - to an effort to ostracize and marginalize Jews. "Local rabbi disinvited from speaking at King breakfast over Israel connection" (19 Jan 2026) by Donald Harrison in The Times of San Diego. Make sure to read the letter from the San Diego Board of Rabbis and Cantors.

And, closer to home, in NYC: "Activist educators are hijacking MLK Day — and Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy — with ‘Palestine teach-in’" (17 Jan 2026) in the New York Post by Dr. Brandy Shufutinsky, who is the Director of Education and National Security at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies and a board member at the North American Values Institute (NAVI).
