Cursive writing was so yesterday in California . . .

(and all over the country)

I know teachers and parents who don't know how to write in cursive. It's not their fault! Some of you may be "victims" of its demise by the movement beginning in the 80's, others from the elimination of cursive by the 2010 Common Core Curriculum.

I have also met teachers and parents who, as kids, went underground and taught or learned cursive anyway!

In the 20th century first graders were proud to learn cursive writing. Some were so eager that they would secretly began writing it on their own.

The movement to deprive children of the thrill of learning cursive skills took away their pride in being "old enough to write in cursive;" the benefit of eye-hand-mind coordination. It doomed them to forever find difficulty reading cursive writing.

14 to 40 or so years later CURSIVE is back! Beginning this fall, it’s required teaching in California public schools in grades 1-6.

This means there are teachers and parents who will need to learn cursive too. Just google a "How to Write in Cursive" and start practicing.

AND while you're at it, here's how to hold a pencil for creating the most beautiful, legible letters and preserving hand & finger muscles. Rest the pencil on the side of your third finger, with the eraser end resting in the crease between your thumb and pointer. Close your thumb and pointer finger on the pencil so you can move it. Have a dry, sunny weekend with the family, Parmalee

On the night you were born,

the moon smiled with such wonder

that the stars peeked in to see you

and the night wind whispered.

Sold a Story: How Teaching Kids to Read Went So Wrong

There's an idea about how children learn to read that's held sway in schools for more than a generation — even though it was proven wrong by cognitive scientists decades ago. Listen to an exposé of how educators came to believe in something that isn't true and are now reckoning with the consequences — children harmed, money wasted, an education system upended. Want to know more about the science of reading?

This list is put together by Emily Hanford, host of the podcast Sold a Story: How Teaching Kids to Read Went So Wrong. I shall be reading and reviewing these ten books on the science of reading. You too? I'll give you my opinion as I can over the next few months. Feel welcome to share your opinion with all our readers. Parmalee, info@santacruzparent.com
