Item Newsletter, Issue #20, May 31, 2021
Dear Hubbard Woods Families,

We are now days away from summer and closing the books on another exciting year at Hubbard Woods School, and we want to send a final message to each of you.

First, thank you to parents, relatives, friends-who once again rose to the occasion during this interesting year. You did the countless temperature checks, accommodation of various schedules, reading 1000’s of emails…all while staying positive and keeping our children’s wellbeing at the center of all of it. We are proud and elated that we had a successful year due to your flexibility and grace.

Second, thank you to everyone who volunteered on our PTO committees! The courage and willingness to volunteer this year when you had NO idea what to expect is so admirable. Knowing that everything needed to be reimagined and reinvented-what you accomplished this year is astounding! We could not have pulled off all of the wonderful things we did for the kids and staff without your courage and creativity!

Third, thank you to Beth Carmody and the incredible HW Staff, for being great partners and allowing the PTO to be such an active part of the school. The PTO and HW Staff have a long and positive relationship that has never strayed from our mission to enhance the experience of our students and staff and positively impact our school environment. Not even a global pandemic can shake our spirit; we are so proud to have worked so closely this year and every year!

As the PTO, we continued many of the traditions HW families and staff love every year, and threw some new things into the mix. In case you are newer and still wondering what the PTO does, here is a sampling of what we did this year alone (even during a pandemic!):

  • We welcomed every new family and paired them a buddy family
  • We coordinated & ran all the programs that provided spirit wear, yearbooks, class photos and pre-packaged school supplies -- all to make parents' lives easier!
  • We organized class parties/activities via our Room Parent Program
  • We took kids on virtual trips to three exciting countries via World Travelers
  • We promoted a sense of community even though we could not be "together" with HW Movie Night and a Family Magic Show
  • We ran an incredible virtual book fair, raising important funds for the Resource Center
  • We conducted an outstanding Teacher Appreciation Week that included great food, surprise gifts for all staff and an amazing raffle
  • We held our first “in person” event in over a year with the 2nd Grade Bike Rodeo
  • We reimagined and celebrated our beloved Mayfest (& can’t wait to blow it out next year!)
  • We planned an awesome upcoming Fourth Grade Farewell to send the kids off to Skokie
  • We represented HW out in the community--at Family Action Network, Alliance for Early Childhood & Central PTO

All in all, we could not do any of the above without YOU! THANK YOU!
With a positive outlook, hope in our hearts and our children at the center of every decision, we look forward to a new school year in the fall! Have a fantastic summer HW!
Hubbard Woods PTO

P.S. I would be remiss to not take advantage of the opportunity to say THANK YOU for letting me be your PTO Pandemic President. Honestly, it has been such an honor to have a front row seat and witness our parents, staff and school shine so brightly in a time of uncertainty. This experience has left a lifelong impression on me and I hope so many others take the chance and get involved in one way or another; it is rewarding beyond measure.

Remember to stay positive, be kind and ROCK THAT RACCOON PRIDE!  ️

News and Notes
Call for 2021-2022 Room Parents!
Please consider volunteering for this special role next year. The PTO needs two Room Parents per class. Responsibilities include: communicating with the teacher and classroom families throughout the school year, planning a casual gathering for parents in the fall, and coordinating parent assistance with classroom projects and celebrations. It is so fun and extremely rewarding!

Please email incoming PTO President, Nissa Cox at nissacox@gmail.com to indicate your interest. Also note that sometimes we cannot place everyone who expresses interest; for example, if 4 parties end up in the same class-we only need 2 Room Parents per class.  You will be contacted in mid-August to confirm your placement once teacher assignments are announced.

Thank you!
We Need YOU!

It's not too late to sign up for a PTO Committee for next school year. Click HERE for the Sign-up.

PTO volunteers make the "perks" happen like world travelers, school assemblies, school photos, spirit-wear, pre-packaged school supplies, yearbook and hot lunch! Don't worry if you haven't helped with an event before, every event benefits from new ideas and new people helping. The HW PTO has a long history of making Hubbard Woods a very special place.

The sign-up will remain open this summer, but slots are filled on a first-come-first-served basis.
District 36 Registration

Don't forget to complete registration for this coming school year with the district! Students must be registered by June 28th, 2021 to facilitate the placement process. You must register with the district to receive any PTO emails for next school year.

Volunteers will be welcome to take home any harvested produce to enjoy. Thank you for helping care for our special treasure at Hubbard Woods!
