The Worthing Town Centre Initiative was formed in 1993 and it has been representing Worthing Businesses for over 25 years.Chris Spratt, a local Chartered Surveyor and Estate Agent, has been at the helm from the beginning but now feels it's time to step down to allow someone else to take over the reins.
Chris said "I'm very grateful to have been able to Chair an organisation that has delivered so much in trying to enliven the Town Centre.  It has also been great fun to be instrumental in setting up events like the first ice rink and the Birdman which brought so much pleasure to people in the town."
The Directors, Steering Committee and Town Team are all very sad to be losing such a great Chairman but feel that he has earned the opportunity for a slightly quieter life.  Chris has agreed to stay on until the Autumn to give Directors time to ensure the right successor is in place.
Chris is going to be a hard act to follow as the Worthing Town Centre Initiative have achieved so much under his leadership.  Think of a town with no Christmas Lights, no Town Centre events, no flowers and no market and this shows what an impact Chris has had on the Town.
The Initiative are always looking for Town Centre businesses to join the committee so if your aspiration is to have a thriving Town with successful businesses then please get in touch.  To find out more please contact Worthing Town Centre Manager, Sharon Clarke, on 01903 203252.

You may have seen the Seafront burst into colour over the last month.  The Worthing Town Centre Initiative have painted the bus shelters from Steyne Gardens to the Pavilion.  This was an idea from the Worthing Journal and there have been some amazing comments from the public.

In May our Seafront Planting competitors came to the prom to prepare their flowerbeds and you will see these are now in full bloom.  The judges from South and South East in Bloom visited us in the last week in June and were very complimentary about the visual appeal of the town. Fingers crossed we will win the best BID in the South & South East for the 4th year running.

Every business can help to ensure Worthing provides a welcome by keeping their areas clean and tidy and also reporting any issues they see.

A Local Action Team has been set up to look at the issue of Shoplifting in the Town.  There are a few individuals responsible for a large amount of stock loss and it has been agreed to focus on a "target list" to ensure that those causing the biggest issues are brought to justice.

It is important that incidents are logged as this will help to ensure we are targeting the right people and ensuring the Police have as much evidence and information as possible to take strong cases forward to the courts.  DISC access is free to any Town Centre Business and this will enable you to log incidents, see pictures of known offenders and report directly to the Police - no more waiting for 101 to answer.  If you want to find out more of sign up then please email

Our plea is for you to ensure we know of any incidents - this helps us review Ranger hours and also identify if there is anything else we can do to assist.

July is a busy month for events and to improve the ambience in the Town the WTCI will be providing free entertainment on Saturdays during the summer.

This month we have the following

14th    RepTylers & Facepainting
21st    Elvis on my Mind & Brighton Jive
28th    Worthing Urban Beach launch

There are also other events being held during the month such as the Worthing Lions festival with the Fair on the Promenade from 20th July; as part of this event the More Radio Live concert will take place on 21st July, and Fireworks from the Pier on 28th July.   The Rowing Regatta was due to be held in June but unfortunately the water conditions were unfavourable and so this has been reschedule to Sunday 15th July.  Worthing will experience its first pride event on 14th July and tickets will be on sale for the very first Worthing Summer Cinema in Denton Gardens 10th - 12th August.

To find out more about any of the events and activities click on and a full list of films for the Outdoor Cinema can be found at

We often hear of the problems caused by Seagulls taking food from the cafe's / restaurants and bars with outside seating. The Crabshack have a discoball and they find this is very effective at reducing the problem.
The WTCI looked at other options along this theme and discovered some bird defender tape which causes light to reflect in the same way as the discoball.  We handed out some of this tape to businesses in Warwick Street to see if it would work and the feedback we have received is that it does improve the situation.
We still have a little tape left so if you would like to try it please email

As I mentioned in a previous Newsletter the Lions Firework Display and Tide of Light lantern Parade have decided to hold their events on different evenings.  The WTCI are delighted to be funding the Firework Display from the pier this year to ensure this important event for the town can go ahead.

The Tide of Light Parade will not be holding an event in 2018 but are using the year to prepare for a spectacular event in 2019.  The organisers are currently raising funds to allow groups and organisations to work with the incredible artists from the New Carnival Company to build extraordinary illuminated lanterns ready for the 2019 parade.  Over half of the money has been raised but they need help to ensure the workshops can go ahead.   To find out more and to pledge please go to :-

On Sunday 12th August the main pedestrian precinct around Montague Street / Montague Place will be taken over by Worthing's independent traders.  We will have 3 large open fronted marquees set up in the area and 25 independent businesses coming along to promote and sell their goods and services.

We are hoping this event will help to promote the great independent shopping offer in Worthing and that it will become a regular date in the calendar.
