As we look back on February, we want to thank our students and staff for honoring Black History Month and for making caring and kindness a priority during IvyCares month. They did this in many positive ways. Please read more below.
For March, we're kicking off Read Across America month with several activities planned.
March also wouldn't be the same without the PTA's annual St. Patrick's Day Dance
next Saturday, March 7
. Scroll down to RSVP.
I hope you received my email last Thursday updating families on Ivymount's preparations to manage the coronavirus. We will continue to communicate as we receive new recommendations from federal, state, and local agencies.
Please know that Ivymount recognizes the impact the coronavirus could have on your families if students and/or family get sick and/or there are extended school closures. We are doing everything possible to ensure a healthy school environment. We know that you will also do your part and keep your child home if they have the flu or symptoms of the coronavirus. We should all keep ourselves and our families as healthy as possible - exercise, eat a good diet, and get lots of sleep.
Finally, stay informed and ensure the information you are getting is from a trusted source like the state health departments or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Misinformation can spread quickly and can make it more challenging for us all to manage the situation effectively. See more below.
Sincerely,
Susan Holt
Director

As new information about the coronavirus and its potential impact on the Ivymount community becomes available, updates will be sent by email. All communications will also be available on the Ivymount website in the coming days.
The CDC continues to recommend general precautions to prevent the spread of communicable diseases, including:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth
- Stay home when sick
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then dispose of the tissue
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects
- Wash your hands often
Ivymount completed a deep cleaning of all spaces on the campus this weekend. Staff are being instructed to clean surfaces, doorknobs, and high-traffic areas throughout the school day.
Students will be reminded to frequently and thoroughly wash hands. For more information about handwashing, visit the CDC's
handwashing website
, which describes five simple and effective steps (Wet, Lather, Scrub, Rinse, Dry). The site includes a video you can watch with your student.

Students Recognize IvyCares
|
|
Throughout February, staff and students discussed aspects of IvyCares month, such as reflecting on the positive impact our actions can have on others, practicing daily concern and kindness, and making positive changes in our community. In one exercise, MLN students wrote on a white board either what IvyCares or the word "care" means to them.
They also watched a
Kid President
video about how good spreads and how it can be as easy as saying something nice to someone else to let them know you care. The students created a list of compliments and caring things they could say to peers and teachers and then passed out cards with the sentiments during the week.

Ivymount Honors
Black History Month
|
|
Students Present Research
To celebrate Black History month, MAP secondary students conducted research projects on prominent black individuals and events throughout American history. They had the chance to explore potential candidates, and choose one most interesting to them.
Students then created a presentation, utilizing various multi-modal formats, and presented their research to their peers and teachers.
At the end of the project, they visited the National Museum of African American History and Culture to explore the topic more in depth.

MLN Students Share Their Dreams
Last week, MLN students were asked to create "Dreams like Martin" statements in recognition of Martin Luther King's famous "I have a dream" speech.
|
|
Their dream statements covered a range of topics. Here are just a few:
"I have a dream that one day animals will not be harmed by people."
"I have a dream that one day sick people (will) go to the hospital for free."
"I have a dream that one day people shall be treated fairly and not fight nor kill each other."
"I have a dream that one day people will never litter again and the environment will be clean."
"I have a dream that one day all dolphins will live free in the wild."

Internet Innovator Visits Ivymount
|
|
Ivymount received a VIP visitor last week - Dr. Vint Cerf, Google's Internet Evangelist and a recognized "father of the internet" due to his pioneering work helping to develop Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) which make up the internet's architecture.
Our students enjoyed meeting Dr. Cerf, discussing the growth of the internet, and hearing about his current work with NASA on the Interplanetary Internet.
As a trustee of Gallaudet University and a person with a hearing impairment, Cerf has been a longtime advocate of accessibility for those with disabilities.
