Our Quarterly Update

March 2015

We Pour
To accommodate an increasing interest in our tasting room as an event location, J Wrigley is pleased to announce that we are installing a large outdoor seating area that can double as a tent site to allow indoor events such as weddings. The new patio will accommodate a 40X40 tent! The addition will be planned for later in March. To make up for the loss of parking due to the expansion, we will be adding a half acre of dedicated parking for our overflow and event parking. The parking is being located separate from the tasting room in order to preserve the intimacy and privacy of our hilltop location. Other amenities being added later this summer will be an area dedicated for catering services as well as additional restroom facilities. We could not grow without the support of the many people that enjoy our wines!

We want to thank all of you who joined us on one (or more) of our Soup Fridays this winter. It was a grand success and we look forward to resuming this tradition later this year in November.

We are now right in the middle of show season, and what a great start it's been! Kicking it off with First Taste of Oregon in Salem, followed by Portland Seafood and Wine Festival and right on into the famous Newport Seafood and Wine Festival, we have been thrilled with the response to J Wrigley wines at each show. Thanks to all of you who have taken the time to seek us out!  Our next stop will be this weekend at the Snohomish Wine Festival in Washington, with the McMinnville SIP, Food and Wine classic right on it's heels. Rounding out this season, will be the Astoria Crab, Seafood and Wine Festival, April 24-26. Also, keep your eyes out for us at Bite of Oregon, August 7-9 and finally Uncorked in Sunriver in September.

The Pour
A note from John Wrigley
Releasing new wines is always one of mixed emotions for me as the winemaker. Through the fermentation process and barrel or tank aging, the wines take on their own personality. Yet, until the wine is in the bottle, we have concerns for their well-being. I suppose it isn't much different than sending kids off to college. You do the best you can for them and hope that the care you have provided will yield the kind of results you can be proud of. So, with those emotions firmly in place, J Wrigley sends the first of our "kids" out the door. Our Ros program has been highly successful and as a result we have partnered with a neighboring vineyard, Morning Mist, to bring more high quality fruit to our expanded production. This year's Ros is a blend of 115 and 777 fruit and continues our run of this amazing wine. We made 325 cases but over half has already been pre-sold. It will be sold out in a few months, so get it now if you like Ros !

The Pinot Gris this year was our first varietal picked at harvest in order to retain the acid levels and citrus notes that our restaurant customers have sought out to pair with their seafood dishes. It is crisp, dry and bursts with amazing citrus flavors. But, I think our star so far, is the very limited amount of Riesling that we have made. Due to such a bountiful harvest we needed about 10 days to clear space in the winery before we could harvest the Riesling. It ended up being the last varietal that was picked, just before the first of the Fall rains began. The fruit was beginning to dehydrate on the vine. And although this caused a drop in the amount of wine we produced the quality is amazing. It has a concentration of flavors that is incredible. Low pH, high acid and just a touch of residual sugar will allow this beautiful white varietal to age for many years. If you are a Riesling lover, you won't want to miss a chance to try this. It is available only through the tasting room.

The Pinot Noirs are also progressing beautifully. The early samplings are showing wines with well-developed dark fruit profiles and a balance that will probably allow them to be approachable earlier than wines from cooler years. What I am finding in our barrels is that the individual clones are showing greater flavor concentration and clonal individuality than in years past. And with the first sizeable harvest of our new 828 clone, we will have more blending options this year. Look for that clone to find its way into our Estate bottling. The record heat from last summer caused challenges in the vineyard, but the wines are showing some real beauty and character. It will be a "don't miss" vintage when the wines are released.
