Shopify Update

JA Canada is pleased to partner with Shopify's Open Learning Program this year to offer students across Canada the opportunity to use a Shopify account for Company Program if they choose.

The account that students will have access to will cost $30/per month which will be covered by JA Canada for this fiscal year. Any costs outside of this basic platform will be the responsibility of each individual Company Program team (e.g. custom store themes, apps outside of the free ones provided, etc.)

Any account created under the Open Learning Program will be set up and overseen by the charter (i.e. JA Central Ontario). Once it is set up, up to 15 advisors/students can be added as staff to manage.

Shopify will provide mentor support and training (through JA Canada) in the form of online walkthroughs, written resource guides and other materials. JA Canada will also be arranging a walkthrough of the store set up for advisors/students in early January.

The Open Learning Program account offers the following:
  • Unlimited Products
  • Unlimited Bandwidth and Online Storage
  • Shopify Point of Sale
  • Online Sales Channels
  • Fraud Analysis
  • Customer Support
  • Manual Order Creation
  • Discount Codes
  • Staff Accounts
  • Overview Dashboard
  • Finance Reports

A few things to note:
  • This provides the e-commerce platform only - students are still required to source out their own products/services to drop ship. Shopify recommends the "Print On Demand" option for teams who are considering the drop shipping method. Please note that a credit card may be needed for drop shipping. If this is a concern for students who do not have access to a credit card they are comfortable using, please let us know.
  • Shipping will be set to within Canada only - no international shipping will be allowed.
  • Taxes will be turned off and students will not need to charge tax on their items.
  • Digital products can be sold through Shopify (i.e. products that require digital downloads).

We will continue to share additional details with advisors and students as they become available. In the meantime, if your team is considering using Shopify, please make a note on your Product Approval Form.

For your reference

The following are notes from previous emails for your reference.
Student Management Training Recordings

If you missed the virtual Student Management Training or if you wish to review the material, the videos and handouts can be found here.
Virtual Product Ideation & Design Thinking Workshop

If you missed this event, you can review the recording here
The handout and overview slides can be found here.
Student Policies & Guidelines

STUDENTS: Please note that as a student you were required to read and agree to the Student Policies & Guidelines document that outlines the expectations regarding your behaviour and conduct in Company Program. If you have not read the document, please ensure you do so.

Failure to adhere to these policies and guidelines will result in your removal from participation in the program.
Attendance, Cameras & Participation

ATTENDANCE: This is a reminder that weekly attendance is MANDATORY and students are required to attend at a minimum 80% of their weekly meetings.

If you need to be absent for any reason, please reach out to your Lead Advisors in advance to let them know.

If a student has missed three meetings with no communication/response to Advisors or has provided no excuses, these students may be removed from the program.

CAMERA: We encourage you to put your camera on when possible and when interacting and meeting with your team. In a regular CP year, you would be meeting in person and we want to try and reflect that environment as much as possible. Your advisors and your fellow colleagues in the program want to meet you and get to know you face-to-face! As a team, you will also decide on what are the expectations to be on camera for everyone - this might mean every meeting, or some meetings or part of some meetings.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding being on camera for any reason, please feel free to reach out to JA or your advisors in confidence.

PARTICIPATION: We know that participation in a virtual environment may be challenging! We are all getting used to this new normal. If you are feeling like you aren't able to participate fully, we encourage you to reach out to your advisors and let them know ways they may be able to help you or maybe they can suggest ways to help you as well. Your advisors and JA are here to support you and to help you make the best out of your Company Program experience.
Access to JA Resources

Students and Advisors have access to two areas for information:

The JA Campus includes the JA Company Program Curriculum Resources.
The JACO Page includes information specific to JA Central Ontario including upcoming dates/deadlines, calendar, communications, advisor corner and awards & team challenge details.

STUDENTS: In order to view the JA Company Program resources on the JA Campus, please follow the following step-by-step instructions:

  1. Sign up for a JA Campus account here.
  2. Log into the account and scroll to find the "Student Company Program Materials"
  3. Select "Enroll"
  4. Go back to the Dashboard - the CP Materials should now be accessible.

NOTE TO ADVISORS: The students can see everything on the resource portal with the exception of the folder marked "JACO CP Advisor Files". These files are also saved on the JACO Resource Page.
Team Challenge Award

Throughout the Company Program year, teams can collect points for participating in various activities, and challenges, having high attendance and for meeting deadlines.

Example of points that will be awarded are outlined here. As well, JA has the right to add in additional challenges throughout the year that will be communicated through email to advisors and students.

The team with the highest point score at the conclusion of the program will be awarded the Team Challenge Award.
