Cyclone Ditwah struck Sri Lanka, and ORH Director Daniel Jones immediately contacted missionary, Stephen Sorrell. Stephen and his wife, Jill, agreed to work with ORH to help the people of their ministry. This following is a report from Brother Sorrell.
"Thanks to everyone who has been praying for those suffering here in Sri Lanka. The official death toll has risen significantly, though it is difficult to get an accurate number. One news site has stated 340 dead with many more than that missing. The mountains seem to have just collapsed onto so many homes and villages. Much of the island is without electricity, but the larger problem is water and food. Many larger cities and smaller towns and villages have no water and food is scarce. Many acres of vegetables have been ruined, so the price of vegetables has risen drastically. For example, one kilo (about 2 pounds) of carrots have gone from about $3 to around $12.
The cost of the food is certainly prohibitive, but the larger problem is the transport. Almost all major roads are closed for travel due to washed out or missing sections of the road and collapsed bridges. Even if food was readily available, getting it to the needy areas is not possible right now."
