JAMPRO's New York office bringing in the bacon

In the 15 months since it reopened its offices in New York, Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO), the trade, investment and promotion arm of the Government, has racked up an impressive performance. Up to the end of December last year the office had explored and was continuing to work on over 40 projects for investments in Jamaica.

The projects - covering 10 sectors - have a potential investment value of US$121 million. The majority of them are in infrastructure, film, tourism and services. Implementation of two projects valued at US$16 million has started in the infrastructure and the cannabis industries, creating 150 jobs in the process. Other projects in housing, manufacturing and infrastructure are also in the pipeline.

With regards to export, 34 opportunities were explored last year. These opportunities relate mainly to the areas of processed foods, fresh produce and condiments, as well as herbs and spices.

Describing its New York office as "a powerful asset to target chambers of commerce, the diplomatic corps, financial bodies and the Diaspora", JAMPRO said it "aims to continue its aggressive strategy in the Tri-State Area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, to bring more businesses to Jamaica".

Jamaica's human capital development agency, the HEART Trust/NTA, is committing J$5,000,000 to the JAMPRO, JBDC and JMEA's export development programme, Export Max III. HEART Trust will be supporting the overall programme, with focus on Export Max's packaging, labelling and branding component.

President of JAMPRO, Diane Edwards, welcomed HEART Trust's support for the programme, saying that it was important to partner on this initiative to boost the competitiveness of Jamaican exporters.

Ms Edwards said, "We're happy that HEART has come on board to support Export Max III as we aim to bring over 40 companies to new markets. With their contribution to this cause, we are optimistic that at the end of the programme we'll see a significant improvement in the companies' branding, packaging and overall operations, which will improve their ability to penetrate international markets."

JAMPRO boosts engagement of Chambers of Commerce

Continuing its outreach to local businesses, the Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) has increased its engagement of Jamaican chambers of commerce to encourage enterprises to use the Agency's services.

JAMPRO has already engaged 6 chambers of commerce across the island, with more planned for 2020.

Chambers of commerce in Trelawny, Savanna-La-Mar, Hanover, May Pen and St. Mary have already met with the Agency to discuss various business-related challenges, and the investment and export opportunities needed in those areas. Major areas of interest include investment in Outsourcing, Tourism, Agribusiness and Housing, as well as business capacity building and export opportunities.

JAMPRO President, Diane Edwards, said this engagement was crucial to facilitate more business across the island, and to give persons a clearer understanding of how the Agency can help them to achieve their business goals.
