MUSIC, FEB 5, 12, 26, MAR 5: Abbey Road and Let It Be – The Songwriting of The Beatles - Stanford Continuing Studies/ONLINE [ArtsEarth Patron] |
Many Beatles fans think the story is clear: here comes the sunny Abbey Road (1969) followed by the dreary swan song Let It Be (1970) documenting The Beatles’ painful end. Reality was vastly different: multiple, intertwined solo and group projects rode a frenzied crest of activity during that period.
This course will show how complex, entangled, and productive the period was, and how these two sonically and conceptually different albums—one designed as a live performance, the other as a glittering, polished studio creation—sprang from the same Beatle source.

Three of the great living instrumentalists working in contemporary jazz reunite in celebration of the 35th anniversary of their landmark 1986 album.
Pianist/keyboardist Bob James and alto saxophonist David Sanborn are two of the most prolific and versatile musicians in the world, boasting credits that span a mind-boggling array of styles and artists. Their careers memorably crossed paths on Double Vision, which spent more than a year on the Billboard charts while earning a GRAMMY Award for best jazz fusion album and a GRAMMY nomination for Al Jarreau’s simmering version of “Since I Fell For You.” This performance marks just the second time Sanborn and James have shared the Miner stage together, following their triumphant quartet appearance in June 2013 during the first San Francisco Jazz Festival held at the SFJAZZ Center.

MUSIC, FEB 4: Circadian String Quartet – Fanny and Felix at Old First Concerts, San Francisco, California, USA & OFC ONLINE | Circadian String Quartet tells the story of older sister Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel and her younger brother Felix Mendelssohn by presenting two masterworks for string quartet-Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel’s dramatic String Quartet in E-flat major and Felix Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in F minor Op. 80. Fanny and Felix were both prodigiously talented musicians but were unequally supported and encouraged in their talents due to the prevalent sexism of the time to the point that many of Fanny’s compositions were errantly attributed to Felix. That this sexist treatment did not dampen their affection and respect for one another is born out by the fact that Op. 80 was composed by Felix as a loving “requiem for Fanny.” It turned out to be Felix’s last composition. Celebrate with us the enduring musicality and strong bond of this famous sister and brother-Fanny and Felix.

MUSIC, APR 2+3: UPDATED - Symphony San Jose presents American Masters: Gershwin, Copland, Bernstein, Ellington at San Jose Center of the Performing Arts, San Jose, California, USA |
Four composers, whose works defined America in the ‘30s and ‘40s, come together on one grand program: George Gershwin, Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, and Duke Ellington.
Copland’s expansive, optimistic Appalachian Spring became known as “the quintessential American sound.” In fact, all four composers could stake that claim. Gershwin and Bernstein each gave us a brilliant mix of symphonic music, jazz and Broadway. And Duke Ellington’s stunning reflection on Black history from slavery to the Harlem Renaissance is considered one of the greatest examples of long-form jazz. Drawing on the blues, soaring gospel music, work songs, swing, and more, Ellington created an all-American orchestral masterpiece.

MUSIC, APR 9: Dark Universe / Mysterious Spaces at San Francisco Conservatory of Music, San Francisco, California, USA | Space is, as the saying goes, the final frontier. For E4TT’s commissions concert in 2022, the group will turn to both outer and terrestrial space: whether considering outer space—with explorations and discoveries from the Mars rover, Perseverance—inner biological space with COVID and CRISPR DNA research, or the unfathomable depths of the earth’s oceans, recent history has shown us that we have much to discover and unravel in order to ensure the survival of our planet and our species. These mysteries are the inspiration for E4TT’s 2022 commissions concert, performed in collaboration with the San Francisco Conservatory of Music’s Technical and Applied Composition Department.

MUSIC, JUN 4+5: Symphony San Jose presents Always Time for More Beethoven at California Theatre, San Jose, California, USA | Conductor Tito Muños will open the final program of the season with works by Buxtehude and Quinn Mason and close with Beethoven’s joyous Symphony No. 7. Beethoven called this work “one of the happiest products of my poor talents”—the perfect choice to conclude Symphony Silicon Valley’s 20th anniversary season. Florence Price was widely performed during the 1030s, but by the fifties her work had dropped from view. Since the rediscovery of the full score for her Piano Concerto in One Movement, Michelle Cann’s ‘exquisite, authoritative’ performances have reintroduced Price to audiences and critics alike. Passionate, part romantic, part bluesy, the concerto is a small sample of Price’s repertory.
