Just in time for the holidays, we are proud to offer a new Hallmark ornament depicting the beloved George Takei as the legendary Star Trek character, Hikaru Sulu. Featuring dialogue from the unforgettable Star Trek episode, “The Naked Time,” the ornament shows a bare-chested Sulu with a fencing foil as he challenges Captain Kirk and other crew members. We are not permitted to sell this online, so you will have to come visit us in person.

    Enjoy your holiday shopping!

Barbed Voices: Oral History, Resistance, and the World War II Japanese American Social Disaster

Barbed Voices: Oral History, Resistance, and the World War II Japanese American Social Disaster

By Arthur A. Hansen. Foreword by Lane Ryo Hirabayashi

Barbed Voices is an engaging anthology of the most significant published articles written by the well-known and highly respected historian of Japanese American history Arthur Hansen.

Updated and annotated for a contemporary context, this book features writing about selected inmates and camp groups who spearheaded resistance movements in the ten War Relocation Authority-administered concentration camps in the United States during World War II. Hansen’s writing provides a basis for understanding why, when, where, and how some of the 120,000 incarcerated Japanese Americans pushed back against threats to themselves, their families, and communities.

    Ishiro Honda

Ishiro Honda: A Life in Film, From Godzilla to Kurosawa

Written by Steve Ryfle and Ed Godziszewski. Contributions by Yuuko Honda-Yun. Foreword by Martin Scorsese.

Ishiro Honda was arguably the most internationally successful Japanese director of his generation, with an unmatched succession of science fiction films that were commercial hits worldwide. With Godzilla (the first kaiju), Mothra, Rodan, The Mysterians, King Kong vs. Godzilla, and many others, Honda’s films reflected postwar Japan’s real-life anxieties and incorporated fantastical special effects, a formula that appealed to audiences around the globe and created a popular culture phenomenon that spans generations.

The authors shed new light on Honda’s work and the experiences that shaped it—including his days as a reluctant Japanese soldier, witnessing the aftermath of Hiroshima, and his lifelong friendship with fellow filmmaker Akira Kurosawa.

Kaiju vs Heroes: Mark Nagata’s Journey through the World of Japanese Toys

    Through March 24, 2019

Kaiju translates to “strange creature” in English but has come to mean “giant monster” referring to the creatures like Godzilla and Mothra that inhabited the postwar movie and television screens of Japan. The advent of these monsters brought about the creation of characters to combat them—hence the emergence of pop-culture heroes like Ultraman and Kamen Rider.

Immerse yourself in a colorful universe of vintage and contemporary kaiju and hero toys from Mark Nagata, a toy designer and fervent toy collector.

For more information about the exhibition, related public programs, and exclusive merchandise, please visit janm.org/kaiju-vs-heroes.

Gambatte! Legacy of an Enduring Spirit

    November 17, 2018 – April 28, 2019

Gambatte! features modern and historical photographs documenting the stories of Japanese Americans who were forcibly incarcerated during World War II. Large-format contemporary photos taken by Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Paul Kitagaki Jr. are displayed next to images shot 75 years ago by such noted photographers as Dorothea Lange, Ansel Adams, and others; each pairing features the same individuals, or their direct descendants, as the subject matter.

Inspired by the Japanese concept of gambatte—to triumph over adversity—the exhibition chronicles the strength and legacy of a generation of Japanese Americans who persevered over unimaginable hardship.
