We are delighted that Kate Dresher will be offering a nonresidential weekend meditation retreat from January 18-20. The topic will be
Friendliness: A Basis for Awareness.
On Friday, January 18 there will be a free public talk open to the public, with the retreat held on Saturday January 19, 9:00-5:00, and Sunday January 20, 9:00-12:00. We will have potluck lunch after the Sunday session.
Those of us who have attended a retreat with Kate know what a gifted inspiring teacher she is. Please consider attending this wonderful opportunity to deepen your practice. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
About the teacher: Kate Dresher has been practicing Buddhist meditation for nearly 20 years. She began teaching in 2010 at the request of her root teacher, Michele McDonald. Kate’s training has been primarily in the lineage of Mahasi Sayadaw of Burma and her practice has been guided most notably by Chanmyay Myaing Sayadaw and Sayadaw U Vivekananda. She has practiced as a nun in Myanmar and has received clinical pastoral training. Prior to following a spiritual calling, she received an undergraduate degree in engineering and a doctorate in economics. Kate’s sharing of the Dhamma emphasizes practicing right where we are as a doorway to the natural unfolding of wisdom and love. She teaches metta and vipassana retreats in the U.S. and British Columbia. She also provides ongoing support and guidance to individual practitioners. Kate currently resides in Portland, OR.

INTRODUCTION TO MINDFULNESS MEDITATION CLASS
I am pleased to announce that registration is now open for our 8-week Spring Introduction to Meditation class. Class begins on Wednesday January 16 from 6:30 to 8 pm.
What: Introduction to Meditation: The Basics of Mindfulness Meditation as taught by Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach

This introduction to meditation class will cover the basics of mindfulness meditation. It will help you discover or deepen the power of awareness and presence in your everyday life.
The dharma talks in this class are presented via video projection and are taught by Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach, internationally renowned Theravadan vipassana teachers.
The four main topics that will be covered in this four-week introduction are the following:
* Establishing a Practice
* Awakening in the Body
* Mindfulness of Emotions
* Freedom from Thoughts
Classes will consist of meditation practice, dharma talks by Jack or Tara, class discussion of video talks, and sharing of class participants' personal experience with meditation.

Committed Practice Classes Resume in January
New Members Welcome
The committed practice groups are an opportunity to bring the practice of insight meditation into all aspects of daily life. It is for those with several months' meditation experience. Participants register and commit to regular attendance of the meetings.
The committed practice groups require one of the following: either a) completion of the Introduction to Meditation Class and the Intermediate Meditation class; or b) three months of regular, preferably daily meditation practice, and a working knowledge of Buddhist concepts. It also implies your intention to practice daily, do the homework, and share your practice in class to the extent that you feel comfortable.
Committed Practice Groups are offered on a dana
(voluntary donation) basis.

for the readings and practice for Fall 2018 and Spring 2019. We will have this time to thoughtfully progress through this profound Theravada teaching of the Buddha, which was handed down to us through the Satipatthana Sutta.

The Sutta Study Course began a new session on Nov. 12 reading and discussing
The Middle Length Discourses of the Buddha
. The next meeting is January 7.
During each meeting we will begin with a short period of silent meditation, read out loud portions of the month's sutta readings, and explore questions or comments you may have about the text. The focus is both on understanding the teachings and on how they are relevant to your own life and practice.
The course will meet about once a month, from 7-9 p.m. Offered on a dana basis.

Regularly Scheduled Show Me Dharma Meditation Sessions
Show Me Dharma offers drop-in meditation sessions every Sunday morning 10:30 am and Tuesday evening 7:30 pm. All are welcome, even if you have never tried meditation before. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn how to meditate. No registration is required. We provide cushions and chairs. Each session offers meditation instruction, a 30-40 minute sit, dharma talk and discussion. These sessions are offered without charge. This service is supported by dana (donations)

We have identified a number of books that have not been checked out recently and are offering these books to sangha members on a dana basis. So, please do peruse these adoptable books. They are located on the table in the office/ cushion area of Show Me Dharma. Remaining books will be relocated at the end of May.
Even the act of selecting a book is a form of generosity, and any Dana given will help support Show Me Dharma financial obligations, which is greatly appreciated.

The Show Me Dharma Caring Committee was organized to provide wise and kind support for and service to members of Show Me Dharma community, the Columbia community at large, and in response to suffering in the world. We are in the process of planning several exciting projects, and as we proceed, we are seeking your participation. Here are some of the projects we are developing, both currently and in the future. Please see our activities below:
Loaves and Fishes Dinner 2019--February, April, June, August, October, and November
As you know, Show-me Dharma now sponsors a meal on the fourth Wednesday of "approximately" every other month (sometimes we do TWO months in a row, like we will do in October and November) to serve approximately 90 to 125 homeless or near-homeless people at "Loaves and Fishes," Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist Church, 702 Wilkes Boulevard, Columbia MO, 65201, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Puerto Rico Relief and Rebuilding Support
180 families benefited from our successful fundraiser last December. Lamps were distributed to families in the following areas: Maracaibo, Vieques, Las Marias Añasco and Aguado. People have been asking for more since the rebuilding of the electrical grid in the country has still not reached mountainous regions of the country (where over 300,000 people are without power). We have been given a special discount by the Luci Solar lamp company (Lamps for $10 instead of $20-22 each). If you would like to contribute $10 to sponsor a solar lamp, please place your donation in the basket at Show-me Dharma, or go to our website
Once we receive all the funds, we will purchase the lamps and panels and send them directly to a community organization in Puerto Rico.
Holiday Cards to support Puerto Rico:
Show Me Dharma has developed relationship of solidarity with two communities in Puerto Rico that were devastated by Hurricane Maria.
Last fall we sent over 200 solar lamps that were distributed among people in different communities by an organization called Centro La Paz in Rincon, Puerto Rico, and this year we held a fundraiser that raised $500 to support Centro de Desarrollo Educativo Politico y Cultural in Caguas Puerto Rico. Both of these organizations are dedicated to helping Puerto Rico rebuild based on a new grassroots model of sustainable development. Thus, our support is not simply an aid, it is helping build a sustainable future for two communities on an island that has long suffered exploitation of its people and resources by colonial powers (principally the U.S.).
This holiday season we invite you to make a donation for this good cause (either online or in person) and take as many holiday cards as you would like to give to your friends and family this December. The cards are on a table in the meditation hall.

CHANTING INTO MEDITATION
EVERY THIRD FRIDAY OF THE MONTH
Chanting into meditation
is based on the yogic practice of raising energy and quickly stopping. The mantras chanted carry a vibration that shifts the consciousness into a broader perspective, as well as releasing the places of holding around the heart. We chant for an extended period, then stop to experience the energy in stillness. Everyone is welcome to enjoy this experience and this community of committed practitioners.
TIBETAN CHANTING GROUP

Show Me Dharma
The Tibetan Chanting Group discusses the use of mindful sound (i.e., mantras), in Tibetan Buddhist mind training. The group learns various modes of chanting common mantras such as those of Green Tara (OM TARA TAM SOHA) and Avalokite (OM MANI PEMAY HUM), the female and male symbols of compassion and loving kindness.
Additionally the Tibetan practice group is offering a beginning class in classical Tibetan on Wednesday at 11 am. All are welcome. Currently the group is working on pronouncing the alphabet correctly (as Tibetan is a tonal language), recognizing, naming and writing the various letters, and formulating simple syllables.
Bishop William Green, who began the group and led it at its inception, has relocated. With Bishop Green's relocating, Carla Campbell will coordinate with group in the future. Bishop Green will continue to be a teaching resource for the group on an intermittent basis. Bishop Green is a bishop in the African Orthodox Church. He also is an inter-denominational chaplain, has studied Buddhism with the Dalai Lama, and is a published scholar on religion in the southern black community. For more information, call 601-316-7614
