JOHNSON RETIRES AFTER 53 YEARS OF SERVICE
After 53 years of service, Mr. Helmon Johnson is retiring from Pearl River Valley Opportunity, Inc. Mr. Johnson began his career with PRVO in 1969. He served as Director of Neighborhood Youth Corps and Deputy Director for 23 years. Mr. Johnson has been the Executive Director of PRVO since 1997.  Under his leadership, PRVO constructed 337 affordable homes for low-income families, annually assist at least 5,000 low-income, elderly, and disabled customers through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), assist 726 families to avoid foreclosure/eviction annually, coordinated efforts with Mississippi Home Corporation to assist eligible households with RAMP applications, partnered with the Lamar County Board of Supervisors to operate Senior Meal Sites in Lumberton, Oak Grove, Sumrall, and Purvis, and assist Head Start/Early Head Start families with health and dental services.  As Executive Director, Johnson has been instrumental in the agency's growth. PRVO grew to staff 450 employees with an annual budget of $30 million.

Johnson has served on several state and local boards. He was appointed by Gov. Ray Mabus to the State Loan and Saving Board. He represented MS Community Action Agencies as an elected member of the Southeastern Association of Community Action Agency Board. He served 3-terms as President of the Emeritus Mississippi Association of Community Action Agencies. He served as a Board member on the Workforce Investment Board for the Southern Mississippi Planning and Development District, State Accreditation Commission Board, the Mississippi Association of Community Action Agencies, Mississippi School Board Association, South Marion Fire Department, and the Marion County Hospital. Mr. Johnson was the first African American elected official in Marion County. He was elected to the Marion County Board of Education. He is a member of the Marion County Civic Club and NAACP.  
 
Johnson graduated from Jackson State University in 1966 with a Bachelor Degree in Political Science. He is a lifetime member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He is married to Barbara Ann Johnson; they have four children and 10 grandchildren.
