JANUARY IS NATIONAL EYE CARE MONTH

National Eye Care Month is celebrated every year in January for one reason: caring for our eyes. Our entire body is one remarkable macro-organism that is still not fully understood by doctors and scientists. Every organ has a unique function, and although it is hard to determine which organ is the most important one can easily say that eyes serve a very important purpose i.e., to see! So to cherish our eyes, one must care for them, and voilà, the National Eye Care Month is there to serve this need.

Munch & Learn Program

Tuesday, January 14, 2025

at the

Washington Township Public Library

Given by: Marty Siederer,

    AARP Speaker’s Bureau

Topic:    “Social Isolation”

Social isolation has reached epidemic proportions and has a negative impact on our emotional and physical health. This program is more a workshop than a lecture that: Raise awareness around social isolation and loneliness, transform the way in which community members view social connections, and empower older adults with tools and motivation to help build and maintain strong support networks and meaningful relationships. Attendees will put pen to paper to develop a plan to maintain and expand their social connections to make their lives fuller and avoid isolation.

Please register on the Washington Public Library website: wtpl.org or contact Lisa in the SRC office activitydirectorsrc@gmail.com

MORE INFORMATION TO COME

Health Corner - by Cathy Segal

Covid variant XEC is on the Rise

XEC was 45% of cases after Thanksgiving and is expected to continue to grow to the leading variant after the December holidays. XEC is a hybrid of two Omicrom variants and is protected by the 2024 Covid booster. Physicians say it has more severe symptoms like the flu - fever, body aches, cough etc.

Based on my observations Covid is just one of the many "things going around" this winter - regular colds, RSV and Flu too - even Whooping cough! On January 3rd, the CDC said that respiratory illnesses were high across the country and getting worse. They watch this two ways - checking waste water for virus (Covid was high, Flu and RSV Moderate) and picking up information from Emergency Rooms.

Here you can see lots of people with Flu and RSV coming in for help.

Did you know that you can now buy a home-test kit that tests simultaneously for Covid, Influenza A and Influenza B? The manufacturers have put additional test lines on the strip and the sample collection process is the same. There is no medicine for RSV, but there is for Covid (Paxlovid) and for flu (Tamiflu or Relenza) that must be started as early as possible after diagnosis.

Best Dietary pattern (US News & World Report)

No surprise here - Mediterranean is #1, and the combination of the DASH diet and Mediterranean - the MIND diet is also top tier.

NEWS FROM THE CHURCH OF THE MESSIAH

A long-time Church of the Messiah parishioner is donating her vast and varied book collection to Messiah as a result of down-sizing her residence. An avid reader and former Chester library employee, (shelved alphabetically by author) her collection spans mysteries, novels, history non-fiction, historical fiction, cookbooks, spirituality and religious books, biographies, art books etc. Most are hardbound but there are some paperbacks. There are several books still in their original book slipcases and shrink-wrapped. Because the collection is so vast, selections will be displayed in the parish hall as we slowly transfer them from her residence to Messiah. We ask for a nominal donation, on the honor system, of $0.50 for paperbacks and $1 for hardback, unless otherwise marked. These funds will benefit the Church of the Messiah, not the Thrift shop.

So many SRC members have life cycle events that they would like to share with their SRC friends. The newly formed Sunshine Club is intended to be a source of cheer and happiness among our SRC family.
