One person who has helped me learn how to be a follower of Jesus is Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a Lutheran Pastor and theologian who stood up to the oppressive Nazi regime in Germany in the 1930’s and 40’s. Because of his words and actions against the Reich, he was arrested, imprisoned, and eventually hanged just one day before American troops liberated his camp. He is a hero of our faith.

Bonhoeffer practiced daily prayer and one of the things I found helpful was that he always began his prayers by asking God for help to pray…  Help to pray.

I know that some of you pray regularly, whether it be in a daily practice or throughout your day. Some struggle with prayer, wondering if we’re ‘doing it right,’ or have questions what to say and how to say it.

Yet, prayer is one of the most important ways to a deeper, more meaningful faith and was modeled for us by Jesus, who prayed often himself.

During the coming year, 2020, I am inviting you to join me on a journey of prayer. We will be emphasizing prayer in our worship, our daily life, with others and even contemplatively alone with God. We will be focusing on prayer in our church, our committees and teams, in our Foundation and the Day School as well. We will learn, try, experience and share our prayers with God and one another.

As we move toward a new time for Christ Lutheran, one that can seem mundane and even  uncertain, we will pray for hope and direction, for inspiration and willingness to become what and who God is calling us, as individuals, and His Church, to become.

2020. A year of prayer.
See you along the way,
Pastor Mark
