Family Inclusive Language | |
|
At the Boys & Girls Club of the West Valley, we work hard to provide a safe, supportive and positive environment for all members and their families. After carefully reviewing our registration forms and website, we realized that some members may have their home life misrepresented on these platforms.
Often, youth centers and schools use the word "parent," "mother," or "father" to describe children’s caregivers when in fact many youth live, permanently or temporarily, with caregivers other than parents. In order to fully support and respect our members and their diverse families, we will use the inclusive terms guardian/caregiver to show members that all families are valid and valued at the Club.
Our hope is that by taking these steps we go further than preventing assumptions made about our member’s backgrounds, and instead, continue to create a welcoming and inclusive Club. Our members should be able to bring their whole selves to the Club and feel comfortable talking about their home life and the people they care about. It’s the foundation of feeling seen and respected after all.

Thank you to our long-time partner whose annual generosity over the years has provided over $65K to our organization. Supporting Great Futures for our members, teens were invited learn about technical careers in the automotive industry through sponsored attendance to the Los Angeles Auto Show.
Members attended a career panel to learn more about the possible careers in the automotive industry, including auto mechanic and service advisor, rode in the electric vehicle Nissan Ariya, had the chance to do an exterior-interior walk around with upcoming electric car, SUV, and truck models, and met with Hyundai Motorsport Race Car Drivers, Taylor Hagler and Michael Lewis, and received autograph t-shirts.

Welcoming Activities
Entering the New Year we had a new site
coordinator at Reseda Elementary. To create a welcoming environment, for Natalie B. and all returning members, we started our first week with introduction activities like Group Agreements, Group Names, Group Chants, Get to Know Me, Vision Boards, etc. This created a great way for the new site coordinator to get to know our members. Youth had a great time and particularly enjoyed the Vision Board Activity because it allowed them to focus on what they want from 2023.

Banner Challenge
This month, members at Blythe Elementary competed in a banner challenge to showcase the Club’s 5 Key Areas and highlight what they love about being a BGCWV member. Pictured are some of their lovely creations!

Club Bash
Club Bash at Chatsworth kicked off with new members and inviting fresh faces to see our program. Staff were able to introduce themselves, make new connections, offer services students might need, and even engage in games with them. After understanding what the Boys & Girls Club of the West Valley has to offer - they were able to enjoy some good food.
