October 2023 Issue
From the Chair....

As fall arrives (although here in Texas it’s still in the 90’s) my memories are of school starting, JA Company student recruiting, volunteer training – and making sure program kits get to all those who are ready to get started in the classroom. As we learned at this year’s National Leadership Conference, there are many more ways to make a difference in kids’ lives than ever before. I hope you’ll consider volunteering for JA again – in person or virtually. Check out the new options - there are so many to choose from!

Our recent Executive Committee included a focused discussion on LinkedIn, and how we can help you connect with more people. We hope you’ll connect with us and your JA colleagues via our LinkedIn page. I’m grateful to Greg Munson for leading our efforts to more effectively use LinkedIn to meet our goal of bringing our members more opportunities for connection.

As an Executive Committee, our goal is to provide you with links to your old friends in JA. We’d welcome your help in reaching out to people we haven’t found yet.  Remember, our only qualification is to have been with JA for five years! If you know someone who should be part of the JA Staff Alumni Network, you can respond to this email and let us know!

Have a wonderful fall!

Funding Our Future

It is both an honor and privilege to be asked to lead the JASAN Campaign for the next two years. Some of you may be thinking “Why? You’re retired from raising money.” The mission still burns brightly for me as I see the work JA is doing around the world. And I want to help.

In October we will be launching our annual campaign with a modest goal of reaching $35,000 for the fiscal 2024-25 year. And I could use some help…making phone calls, and following up with emails. Pretty simple stuff. Please let me know if you can help. Shoot me an email at gilfoyle@comcast.net

The funds we raise support JASAN’s mission with student scholarships, the Karl Flemke Award, the Professional Staff Hall of Fame, and much more.

Let’s do this! (don’t forget – you can make your contribution today!)
Did You Know?

Where it all began….

In 1919, Junior Achievement was founded to help young people gain the skills needed to be successful adults. JA continues that mission today.

Early on, JA operated primarily in the Northeastern United States. The 1930’s were challenging and like many organizations, JA struggled through the Great Depression. As they do today, businesses continued to support the JA effort.

JA student companies supported the war efforts in the 40’s and in the 1950’s JA began its
unprecedented growth. JA expanded nationally and opened the first international office in Canada. JA-affiliated Young Enterprise was established in the United Kingdom in the 1960’s and soon JA-associated organizations started in other parts of the world.

New Member Welcome!
Welcome Cheryl Potman! Cheryl started working for JA of Southern Colorado in October 2015 as a part-time Special Events Manager. Throughout her tenure, her responsibilities and position grew and she was the Donor Engagement & Special Events Manager when she left in May of 2023. While with JA SoCo, Cheryl launched their “Day of Giving & Golfing Tournament” which coincided with the annual Day of Giving. She also launched their “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader” event virtually in 2020 and then as a signature event with their auction/gala.

Cheryl works part-time for Forge Evolution in Colorado Springs. When she’s not working, she enjoys golf, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

As a new member of JASAN, Cheryl would like to stay connected and help spread the word about all the great things JA is doing in local communities. She is a BIG believer in the JA mission!
The JASAN spotlight is on ... LINDA SCHOELKOPF!
Our goal is to introduce you to individual JASAN members. The spotlight is now on our JASAN Chair, Linda Schoelkopf, who was a JA student and had a successful 30+ year career with JA! We asked Linda a few questions…see her responses in this video.
Do You Know Someone??

We are always looking for New Members! If you know someone who worked for JA for five years or more, and you think they would be an awesome addition to our JASAN membership, please let us know.
