Senator Chris Van Hollen Presents JCA® with Proclamation
In celebration of JCA's 50th anniversary, a proclamation was issued by Senator Chris Van Hollen. It celebrated “outstanding dedication to the needs of older adults.”
JCA, in turn, expressed appreciation for his good words and “gratitude for all you have done to help older adults throughout our community maintain independence, dignity, empowerment, and self-respect.”
JCA's anniversary celebrations continue on July 11 at 9 a.m. when the Montgomery County Council issues a proclamation in our honor.

Staff Profile: Kathi Dennis
Kathi Dennis, Senior Director of the Heyman Interages® Center, has built a career supporting volunteers. Kathi spent 17 years at IAVE - the International Association for Volunteer Effort, then Good Deeds Day International, before coming to JCA. After earning a degree in Environmental Education and serving with the Peace Corps in Kenya, Kathi went to the public school system. She realized early on that she wanted to work outside of the formality of the classroom and moved on to work as the Director of the Youth Volunteer Corps of Metropolitan Detroit. This experience illustrated the practical applications and educational benefits of service. A position with the Americorps Youth Program brought Kathi to the DC area and eventually to JCA. Kathi is inspired by the relationships and friendships built by the Interages programs and seeing the kids and volunteers enjoy their interactions. "Intergenerational programming is about making intentional connections. It's magic!" she says of the success of Interages.

March Senior Resources Guide
The Job Picture is Looking Up; Many Employers Want To Hire Seniors
During the pandemic, many people of all ages left the workforce. Workers have begun returning, but frequently to different jobs where they are receiving better pay and experiencing less frustration. Things are starting to settle—there are still 1.7 job openings for every job seeker.
A big reason people of all ages are returning to the workforce is the economy. With inflation high – think the cost of eggs and gasoline – and talk of a recession looming, people are seeking new and higher paying jobs. For older adults, the amount of money it takes to retire comfortably has changed. What once was believed to be enough to take care of their costs -and a vacation or two – now barely covers the basic necessities.

Purim and St. Patrick's Day
The month of March brought Purim and St. Patrick's Day celebrations to the Kensington Clubs.
For Purim, members enjoyed a visit from Milton Gottesman Jewish Day School Pre-K class and teachers. The kids joined in on the mask-making art project. Later in the week, members enjoyed traditional hamentashen.
For St. Patrick's Day, JCA’s own Elaine Looney and the Culkin School of Dance entertained the group with an Irish step dance performance. In a cultural mash-up, St. Patrick's Day became Challahday with a challah baking demonstration and some green treats!

Interages Volunteers Participate in Read Across America
In a piece about the event, News outlet MOCO 360 explains that though this specific partnership may be new for JCA, Interages has been running similar programs for over ten years. Steven Warrick, the regional manager of three MCPL branches, said not only are these events intergenerational—they’re cross-cultural. “In some ways, it’s what Montgomery County is all about,” he said.
