Staff Profile: Jodie Rasch
Jodie Rasch, Manager of the Career Gateway and 50+ Employment Expos, began her career in employment law. After eight years working with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and some time as a full-time mom, Jodie was looking to re-enter the workforce. An item on a listserv led her to JCA's Career Gateway. Little did she know that this would be a life-altering decision! The Career Gateway gave Jodie the confidence she needed to pursue her next career move. It just so happened that around the time that she was completing the program, the director was retiring, and the Career Gateway had an opening for new leadership. Jodie was a perfect fit and became the director of the program three weeks after graduating. She has seen other graduates go on to secure good jobs, with several being hired at JCA like she was. Jodie says, "I know the program works. I see it every day. We change lives one job at a time."

Travel Training Workshops Demystify the Local Public Transit System
After a hiatus of three and a half years, Connect-A-Ride has re-started its Travel Training workshops. Travel Training, a free half-day workshop, helps Montgomery County residents aged 50+ get confident and comfortable taking public transportation. Participants learn how to read the Metro map, understand digital schedule signs, load a fare card, and where to find a station’s emergency and accessibility features. Participants experience classroom training, a trip on a Ride On bus, and a one-station round-trip Metro ride. Participants included a 98-year-old and an electric scooter user. From residents who moved to the county during the pandemic to those who used to commute to work via Metro, everyone learned something. Burney Simpson, the Travel Trainer, ensured that seniors knew they always ride for free on Ride On buses and demonstrated how to use Metro's Trip Planner. Several participants at the Benjamin Gaither workshop loaded money on their Senior SmarTrip cards at the end in anticipation of an outing to Union Station to practice their new skills! Upcoming workshops are planned in May and June. Additional workshops will be scheduled in the summer and fall. Contact Connect-A-Ride for more information at 301-738-3252 or ConnectARide@accessJCA.org.
