JCA® Provides Donated Turkeys to SCSEP Participants
|
A few weeks ago a kind donor contacted the Senior HelpLine offering 11 turkeys for JCA program participants. Several SCSEP (Senior Community Service Employment Program) participants were chosen at random and came to the Bronfman Center on Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving to pick up their turkeys.
The recipients were pleased to receive a holiday bonus. "I am grateful for JCA and plan to cook it for my 8 children, 24 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren," said one SCSEP participant. What a wonderful way to celebrate Thanksgiving!

Eli's Loaves of Love Celebrates its 2-Year Anniversary
Eli's Loaves of Love celebrated its second anniversary this month and delivered its 700th challah. The newly renamed program makes monthly challah deliveries to senior adults and takes its name in memory of Eli Fatow, who spent years distributing challahs to hospitalized patients each Friday morning. In addition to bringing the traditional Shabbat food, volunteers have a chance to chat with isolated older adults.

Blog Highlights
The JCA Blog, Information for the Sandwich Generation, is going strong. In the month of November, two posts highlighted JCA's impact on quality of life and the assistance offered by the Senior HelpLine. JCA CEO, Shane Rock, outlined how JCA’s services positively impact older adults' social determinants of health, leading to greater independence, dignity, and joy. Another blog post, written by Rhetta Vinson, Major Gifts Officer, described the services offered through the Senior HelpLine. JCA’s Senior Helpline should be one of the first phone calls a concerned family member makes when observing declining health. But other common inquiries handled by the HelpLine deal with housing, transportation, and help with technology.
In addition to these useful posts written by JCA's own CEO and staff, the blog shares valuable information from other sources. Check in with us often!

November 29 is Giving Tuesday
Thanksgiving kicks off the Holiday season, but do you know about all the special days in November? The series goes like this: Thanksgiving (gathering and feeling grateful), Black Friday (shopping), Small Business Saturday (more shopping), Cyber Monday (even more shopping), and Giving Tuesday (donating to your favorite causes). JCA is able to offer programs to older adults in our community through the generosity of our donors. Every donation is greatly appreciated, regardless of the size. Giving Tuesday is the perfect time to support JCA in helping all seniors thrive!

Local Writer with a JCA Connection Probes Family Mystery in New Book
Tablet Magazine Executive Editor, Wayne Hoffman, has written a book that focuses on both his mother’s decline due to the effects of Alzheimer’s as well as the murder of his maternal great-grandmother. Mr. Hoffman's mother, Susan, participated in both Jewish Council for the Aging’s Kensington Clubs and Misler adult day care centers. “The whole time I was doing the research, I watched my mother’s decline,” Hoffman said. It got to the point where the “two stories were so intertwined in my mind. They were braided.”
Susan Hoffman recently passed away, and JCA has reposted the blog post about Mr. Hoffman's presentation at Leisure World this spring. Read the full book synopsis on Mr. Hoffman's website.
