3.24.23

Dear Cheryl,

The St. Louis Kaplan Feldman Holocaust Museum and the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC), through the Newmark Institute for Human Relations, are two of several organizations to support the public lecture taking place this Monday, March 27 with David Kertzer on his new book, The Pope at War: The Secret History of Pius XII, Mussolini and Hitler.

The supporters of this program have joined together because we all agree on the historic significance and contemporary relevance of The Pope at War, which is based upon the latest research from the Vatican’s newly-opened archives. What Kertzer learned, and will share on Monday, sheds light on the largely untold, and often debated, role the Vatican and Pope Pius XII played in response to the Holocaust.

Like Kertzer, the St. Louis Kaplan Feldman Holocaust Museum aims to educate the public with the latest research in the field of Holocaust studies. We empower all visitors to engage with the history of the Holocaust – told through the stories and voices of those who experienced it firsthand – and to consider ways to apply its powerful lessons in our daily lives.

At the Museum, we remind people that “Change Begins with Us.” We truly believe that diving into the challenging history of the Holocaust, the topic of Monday evening's lecture, encourages each one of us to reconsider new ways to reject hated, promote understanding, and lead change in our communities.

We hope to see each of you on Monday at 7:00 pm at Graham Chapel at Washington University for this important program. Please see below for more information and how to register.

JCRC Updates

JCRC Impact Report

JCRC mailed an impact report that shared our achievements in 2022 to our 1,090 donors and supporters two weeks ago. Here is a link to a digital copy. We are excited to share our success with the community.

Student to Student Presents to Senator Brian Williams' Youth Advisory Board:

After months of planning, a new first-time invitation came to the Student to Student program of the Newmark Institute at JCRC to present and teach to the Youth Advisory Board (YAB) of Senator Brian Williams of the 14th District. This new partnership that we know will continue for years, was highlighted as our students Sela, Hanan, Rachel, Benjamin, and Delilah all presented and answered many insightful questions. There were 18 students from a variety of high schools in attendance on the YAB. This meeting took place at the Delmar DivINe and began with a tour and discussion about the facility and co-meeting space. We look forward to continuing to build a relationship with the director, Colby Crowder and the Senator's team and to other events together.

All of the students from the Youth Advisory Board and the Student to Student leaders enjoyed being in dialogue together.

Special thanks to Hanan, Rachel, Delilah and Ben who came during their Spring break to make this presentation at Delmar DivINe.

Student to Student group leader Sela shows how Hebrew books read from right to left and open in a way that appears backwards for English speakers.

JCRC Advocacy Update

The Missouri General Assembly was back from Spring Break Monday, and this week we are devastated to see the passage of Senate Bills 49 (which limits access to gender-affirming healthcare) and 39 (a trans youth athlete ban).

We encourage you to read this week's Advocacy Alert for ways you can make a difference.
