How job developers need to take time to recuperate

Editorial by Christian Saint Cyr

National Director / Canadian Job Development Network

.

Every Monday, we get together to talk about how we can better engage employers; better prepare our clients or students; work with our colleagues to adopt a more employer-focused approach; or ways we can raise our brand in the community. Every week, it's about how to sharpen our skills, our work or our approach and frankly it's exhausting.

.

As a parent, I like it when you're on an airplane and the flight attendant tells you that if the cabin is to depressurize, to put the mask on yourself before you put it on your child. It's likely the only time parents are ever encouraged to put themselves first.

.

But it's also in the best interests of the kids. Kids need an alert parent to take care of them in an emergency and I'm going to go out on a limb here and say, job seekers need an alert job developer to be successful in job search.

.

On a personal, professional, societal and and economic level, 2025 has been an awful year and it's possible 2026 is going to be an even worse year.

.

According to a recent Ipsos poll, 71% of respondents across 30 countries, think things will look up next year but people are split on whether the worldwide economy will be stronger (49%) or not (51%).

.

Regardless of whether December is a holiday time for you, it's a time to take a breath, refocus and re-energize going into a time of uncertainty.

.

I'm an introvert, so like many introverts, I take time to rejuvenate by spending time on my own.

.

In the days when I did more in-person training, some of my favorite time was simply driving to a neighbouring city and allowing my mind to roam on the open road. I would come up with new ideas, different ways of doing things and it would even temper my perspective on things I might be inflexible, anxious or upset about. Having that sort of 'me' time is a tremendous opportunity for me.

.

I would encourage you to take the next two weeks to take a little time for yourself to recuperate and refocus. I could easily rattle of a list of tasks you can undertake to be better prepared for the new year; strategies to engage with employers; or ways to help build competency with your colleagues.

.

Instead, do whatever helps you build yourself up. That might be time by yourself and it might be spending time with friends and family. It might be reading, or watching a Hallmark movie and pulling apart a transmission.

.

And if the next two weeks is going to be anything but relaxing, first of all, you have my sympathies. I sincerely hope you can find a little bit of time to relax and rejuvenate. I hope you're able to come into the office on January 5th with a renewed sense of optimism and energy.

.

To everyone who supports the Canadian Job Development Network, I just want to thank you for your support over the past year. Your participation and your energy has been a tremendous source of encouragement to me. And if your celebrating Christmas this week, I'd like to Wish you Merry Christmas and if not, I hope you have a relaxing time and an opportunity to spend time with people you love and care about.

.

We’ll be discussing different your plans to rest and rejuvenate at our #MotivatingMondays meeting of the Canadian Job Development Network, Monday December 22nd at 8:30am Pacific; 9:30am Mountain; 10:30am Central; 11:30am Eastern; 12:30pm Atlantic and at 1pm in Newfoundland.

TIP OF THE WEEK

Greetings!

.

The holidays can be an isolating time for many job seekers due to stress, financial concerns and uncertainty about the future. Telling them to take a 'break' can be confusing or create anxiety, but it might be helpful to dialogue about what they can do in the next two weeks to find joy or a sense of relief during this time. It will be different for everyone but it's the best way to demonstrate your care for them.

.

All my best!

.
