A Note From the Head of School
As the school year draws to a close, I reflect on how wonderful it has been to see alumni engaging in our community this year. From the JDS Auction & Gala to OneTable Shabbat dinners around the country to school events like Pop In & Play, it has been a joy to reconnect with our alumni community and hear your stories.

For the first time since 2019, our eighth graders were able to participate in the beloved tradition of traveling to Israel together. As I’m sure you remember from your own JDS Israel trip, this culminating experience allows our students to more deeply explore their Jewish identity and make memories that will last a lifetime. We’ve shared some highlights from their trip, as well as Israel trip photos from the Classes of 2013 and 2015, in this newsletter.

Lastly, I would like to extend a warm invitation to our Annual Meeting on June 7, 2023. We’ll schmooze, share important JDS updates, and celebrate our community. We hope you’ll join us!

Have a wonderful summer, and we look forward to continuing to connect with you next year!

With gratitude,

Meghan Kimpton

Class of 2023 Israel Trip
In March, JDS eighth graders, along with middle school Jewish Studies Teacher HaMorah Nance Adler and STEM Teacher HaMoreh Chad Sarni, continued the JDS tradition of traveling to Israel. Here HaMorah Nance shares about the exciting adventures the eighth graders had:
It was amazing to finally return to Israel with this year's eighth graders. Our small but mighty group had amazing adventures from north to south. We explored the Golan where we ate the "world's best falafel," then headed south where we learned about Ilan Ramon at the Mitzpe Ramon Visitors Center. In Tel Aviv, we took an awesome Grafitiyul and got to make our own graffiti-style artwork to bring home. The eighth graders hiked up Masada for the sunrise and stayed up late into the night for a star gazing hike into the desert. It was a once-in-a-lifetime adventure for all, and the memories will not soon fade!
Take a Trip Down Memory Lane
Do you remember your eighth grade Israel trip? Take a peek at Israel trips from 2013 and 2015! We love that this long-standing JDS tradition has had such a powerful impact on our alumni.

OneTable Shabbat
JDS Class of 2005
This April in Seattle, members of the class of 2005 gathered together to welcome Shabbat, light candles, eat challah, and enjoy each other’s company. Memories were shared and there were a lot of laughs! If you are interested in co-hosting a Shabbat dinner, please reach out to alumni@jds.org!
JDS Alumni X Optimism Brewing

In January, JDS alumni in the Seattle area came together to share memories, look at JDS yearbooks, and catch up with old friends. It was incredible to get together, reminisce, and hear your stories!

Alumni Spotlight
Josh Niehaus, Class of 1997
Josh Niehaus is both a JDS alum and JDS’ Kehillah leader and music elective teacher. Read to find out how he reconnected with the JDS community and why he continues to support our school.
As a student at JDS, I made amazing friends and had a lot of fun experiences. One memory that jumps out is being on the inaugural JDS basketball team. While we were a small team and didn't win very often, we always put up a good fight, and it was fun to represent JDS.

As an adult, I came back to JDS because I was asked to play music, but I keep coming back week after week because of the community, great teachers, and kind students. JDS is a really happy place and it feels great to be a part of it.

Teachers let every unique personality flourish, allowing the students to feel comfortable being themselves and accepting of each other's differences. It is a special place because people treat each other with so much respect.

Get involved by attending one of the JDS alumni events! Now that I am back at JDS, I plan to attend more alumni events and the annual fundraiser, a cause which has a direct impact on fostering Jewish identities and helping to raise kind people.

Laura Revesz Altman hit her 10-year anniversary at Amazon in November 2022 and is currently raising her two children, Max and Dylan, in Newcastle, only a few minutes from where she grew up. Amram Migdal lives with his wife Rebecca and their three daughters in Waltham, Massachusetts. Meirav (8) and Sarit (6) attend the Jewish Community Day School, Boston's beautiful pluralist day school, which reminds Amram of his favorite memories from JDS. Professionally, Amram writes case studies and other teaching materials as a senior researcher at Harvard Business School. Rachel Friedman and her husband Geoff recently moved back to the PNW, north of the border, from Australia. Rachel spent 6.5 years in Australia, completing her Ph.D. in Brisbane, then working in Canberra. They moved so that Geoff could start a research fellowship in ocean sciences at the University of Victoria, and Rachel will be transitioning from her Australian job to a similar fellowship at UVic in geography toward the end of this year. She is excited to be close to family and a number of close friends from her years at JDS again!
Since graduating from law school, Neil Weiss has become an attorney who has helped to start a nonprofit legal clinic that now has legislative funding for families at risk of CPS intervention and removal of their infant. Neil and his wife Mary have two children, Benjamin and Ethan, and live in Montlake. Neil's most treasured memory from JDS was his eighth grade Israel trip.
Alyssa Novick Zupnick has been living in Phoenix with her husband for the last 11 years, and working in education since she graduated from University of Arizona. It was definitely an experience of a lifetime!
Class of 2004
Adam Gillman recently received his rabbinic ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City. Adam has spent the past several years studying, teaching, and serving the Jewish community in the New York area and in Israel, including a chaplaincy at NYU Langone Health, a summer fellowship at T’ruah, student teaching at Solomon Schechter School of Manhattan, and rabbinic internships with congregations in Nyack and Long Island. In July, Adam begins his role as the Rabbi at Morristown Jewish Center Beit Yisrael, a conservative movement congregation in Morristown, New Jersey. A favorite JDS memory for Adam is getting up with his classmates to see the sunrise at Kibbutz Hanaton on the first morning of their Israel trip.

Adams, national park trips, hikes with their pup Willie, two half marathons, and lots of experimenting in the kitchen. They are looking forward to many more excursions, especially during the beautiful Seattle summer. Leora fondly remembers when her classmate Sarah Bowman brought her horses to their history class and paraded them around the field all dressed up as if they were in the American Revolution.
