NOW HIRING: Program Officer, Visitor Products

Juneau Economic Development Council (JEDC) is seeking a motivated expert in the visitor industry to support the sustainability of this sector in Southeast Alaska, including Juneau - the most visited city in Alaska during summer. This initiative involves collaboration with neighboring communities like Ketchikan, Sitka, and Skagway, as well as lesser-visited communities in the region. Reporting to the Executive Director, this individual will research, convene, and collaborate with recreation and tourism interests, communities, and agencies operating in and around Southeast Alaska, including the Tongass National Forest.

Southeast Regional Eldercare Coalition

The Senior Regional Eldercare Coalition (SREC) is made of eldercare providers from across Southeast Alaska who have joined together to problem solve mutual issues, share information, and be a collaborative catalyst for change in the realm of eldercare services to support older adults in maintaining their independence at home for as long as possible.

According to Alaska's Department of Labor's data, for the first time in Juneau's history, the population of individuals aged 60 and above has surpassed the number of individuals under 20. This milestone highlights the importance of this work and emphasizes the need for this regional project.

Work is now underway as outreach to stakeholders and engaging in meaningful conversations about the project has begun. Tonya, SREC's Program Director, is also diligently researching the ongoing workforce efforts, both locally and nationally, to ensure we are well-informed and equipped to make a significant impact.

We would like to extend an invitation to those who are interested to join us for our monthly meeting. It will provide an excellent opportunity to meet others providing services to elders, exchange ideas, and collaborate on initiatives. Meetings are held the first Friday of each month at 8:30 AM. Contact Tonya below for more details.

Three positions are currently open for the SREC project. If you or someone you know possesses the necessary skills and passion for making a difference, we encourage applications.

Coastal Helicopters

"Coastal Helicopters subscribes to the Helicopter Association International “Fly Neighborly” Program and the Alaska Air Carriers “Medallion Safety Program.” Coastal Helicopters considers the safety and comfort of local residents at all times.

Our primary objective is to support local business and industry in Air Taxi / Charter flying. Coastal provides air support for the local power company with over 45 miles of remote power lines. This often requires hovering in close proximity to the power lines and towers in adverse weather conditions to aid in troubleshooting line problems. The telephone company also requires helicopter assistance for the maintenance and repair of mountain top repeaters throughout SE Alaska that provide telephones to most of the small villages and a myriad of small boats. Coastal Helicopters also provides logistical support for the mining community in the form of transporting crews and geologists to remote areas for research and development and to transport supplies. Additionally, we conduct airborne geophysical and electronic survey work.

We continue to grow as demand increases in the areas of tourism and heli-skiing. Our focus in the visitor industry is to provide professional and exciting tour opportunities to individuals or groups of independent travelers. Where we can supply that support in a safe environment without adversely impacting the local community, it is our intention to do so. "

STEM Equity Community Innovation Grants

The Juneau Economic Development Council (JEDC), who delivers the FIRST in Alaska program, is thrilled to announce that it has been one of five community organizations around the world awarded a STEM Equity Community Innovation Grant.

JEDC’s grant proposal stood out among many highly competitive applications, showcasing the organization's commitment to expanding STEM engagement for youth in the Bristol Bay region of Alaska. Our partnership with the Bristol Bay Regional Career and Technical Education (BBRCTE) Program has been instrumental in identifying the need for STEM opportunities in this remote area and devising a sustainable plan to meet those needs. This grant provides us with the opportunity to bring these programs to Bristol Bay and make a lasting impact on the students and communities we serve. Overall, FIRST in Alaska will work with four school districts in Bristol Bay to create FIRST LEGO League and FIRST Tech Challenge teams, impacting approximately 150+ students in the area

JEDC recognizes that achieving this goal still requires collaboration with local sponsors and air taxis to overcome the logistical challenges of operating in a remote area. By working closely with community partners, we will ensure that students have access to the resources, equipment, and transportation needed to participate in these program.

Downtown Business Association

"In 1887, the seven-year-old mining camp of Juneau enticed the owner of the Sitka Trading Company to open a branch on Front Street at the present location of Miners Mercantile, formerly Lyle’s. Its first manager made a name for himself that remains cemented in our history today.

Today the original 20-foot-high former bank building ceiling and tall windows provide soaring views of the mountains that inspired Betsy and Scott Fischer in the 1970s to name their outdoor store Foggy Mountain Shop. Fischers sold their downtown shop in 2014 to Sean Rielly and Courtney Nicholl, both long-time employees. When Sean and Courtney relocated the business to the Behrends Bank building from Franklin Street in 2022, they designed their sales counter to give customers great vistas of Mt. Juneau. On winter days they can watch their off-duty staff climb the steep mountain and frozen waterfalls that are clearly visible through the large windows."
