Juneau Economic Development Council NEWS | December 2025

Merry Christmas and Happy New Years from JEDC!

Economic Indicators: Private Sector Employment in Juneau

In 2024, Juneau saw the highest private sector employment on record at 11,332 jobs, with private sector employment numbers surpassing 2019 by about 100. Total employment (private sector + government sector) peaked in 2015, with government employment observing decline since it peaked back in 2004.

We proudly present the 2025 edition of the Juneau & Southeast Alaska Economic Indicators and Outlook report to our community. The report is an annual publication exploring trends in employment and earnings, demographics, education, construction, business and industry, and much more.

Through this and all of our other research, we hope to increase awareness and engage citizens in local and regional economic issues.

As part of the rollout of this year’s report, JEDC is pleased to give presentations to business and community groups on the state of Juneau's economy. If you would like to schedule a presentation, send Brian an email at bholst@jedc.org or Amy at arautiainen@jedc.org.

Upcoming "Juneau Futures" Workshops

Last month, JEDC partnered with CBJ to host a “Juneau Futures” Workshop, part of the ongoing Comprehensive Plan Update project. The workshops are part of a Scenario Planning exercise that will help inform the policies and strategies of the Comprehensive Plan, CBJ’s guiding document for growth and development over the next 20 years.

JEDC has actively championed Scenario Planning as a tool for creating resilient, forward-thinking strategies. If you did not have a chance to participate in the November workshops, we encourage you to sign up for one in January.

In this hands-on, interactive workshop, you’ll step into the role of a City Planner, working in small teams to tackle real-world challenges, weigh trade-offs, and make strategic decisions about Juneau’s future – all with limited resources and an often-unpredictable mix of opportunities and obstacles.

Upcoming Workshops:

  • Thursday, 1/8, 5:30-7:30 PM @ Valley Library
  • Thursday, 1/15, 5:30-7:30 PM @ Douglas Library
  • Thursday, 1/22, 5:30-7:30 PM @ Devil’s Club Brewery (downstairs)
  • Friday, 1/23, 11:30 AM -1:30 PM @ Generations Southeast

SPACE IS LIMITED and registration is required. If you’re interested in joining, please complete the form below to be placed on the waitlist. You’ll be notified of your participation status prior to your selected workshop date.

If you are unable to attend in person, or would like a preview of what to expect, please check out the online open house and survey: Juneau Futures Online Open House.

2026 Alaska Angel Conference

JEDC proudly serves on the organizing team for the Alaska Angel Conference (AAC), which aims to increase the number of angel investors in Alaska's statewide startup ecosystem by pairing experienced angel investors with novice investors and leading them through the process of identifying, filtering, selecting, and managing a group angel investment. The AAC also helps nurture the companies and mentor the entrepreneurs who apply for funding. The end goal is to award an investment to one of the startups that apply. Since 2019, the AAC has invested $665,000 into six Alaskan startups, made possible by the Innovating Alaska Act (informally named the Alaska Crowdfunding Act).

The final pitch event took place on December 11 at The Nave in Anchorage. After undergoing extensive due diligence and deliberation, four finalists presented at the event: beadedcloud, AirVitalize, SWOOP, and Adivo.

A big shout out to the organizations helped put it together this year: the Alaska Investor Network (AIN), Alaska Version 3 (AKV3), the Center for Economic Development (CED) at the University of Alaska Anchorage, the Center for Innovation at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, 49th State Angel Fund with the Municipality of Anchorage, and the Juneau Economic Development Council.

Congrats SWOOP!

AAC investors selected Virginia Lynn Peterson, founder and CEO of SWOOP, as the recipient of this year's $100,000 investment.

SWOOP is an Alaska-born lifestyle brand redefining what functional, flattering clothing can feel like. Founded by emergency room nurse Virginia Peterson, SWOOP was born from one simple truth — women deserve clothing that keeps up with real life.

As a women-led and Alaska-inspired brand, SWOOP celebrates the strength, humor, and individuality of women everywhere. Every pattern, every fit, and every stitch reflects our belief that when women are comfortable, they show up differently — for themselves and for their communities.

Move Freely. Live Boldly. Always Be Swooping.

Rooted in lands, growing together.

With distinct languages, practices and traditional territories, Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian peoples have known the rugged forests, rocky coasts and verdant islands of Southeast Alaska as home since the dawn of time. While each people have maintained separate and distinct cultural identities over the centuries and into the present day, Sealaska represents all three as the regional Alaska Native corporation for Southeast Alaska, established in 1972 following the passage of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) through Congress in 1971.

Celebrating over 50 years in business, Sealaska and its 26,000 Alaska Native shareholders prioritize balance in business—and in life. Take the Survey: Juneau Seasonal Workforce Housing

Does your business employ seasonal workers? We need your input!

Juneau’s economy depends on a strong seasonal workforce, yet employers across industries report that a shortage of available, affordable housing is limiting their ability to recruit and retain employees and meet demand during the busy season. To better understand the scale and specifics of this challenge, we are conducting a brief survey of Juneau businesses that employ seasonal workers.

Your responses will help quantify the actual number of seasonal “beds” needed, document the housing solutions employers are already using, and identify where unmet demand and financial or operational burdens are greatest. The results will inform the planning and design of potential seasonal workforce housing solutions in Juneau, including employer-focused and public–private partnership models.

If you have colleagues or other employers in your industry who employ seasonal workers, please share this with them. We want the most complete picture possible. The survey should take approximately 10–15 minutes to complete. We encourage one response per business location or operation. Individual responses will be kept confidential and only aggregated results will be shared.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to participate and for helping shape practical housing solutions that support Juneau’s seasonal workforce and overall economy.
