Juneau Economic Development Council NEWS | July 2025 | | Community Land Trust Model for Juneau
|
Homeownership is the cornerstone of a strong community. Juneau faces significant housing challenges that make affordable housing solutions particularly urgent. The high cost of housing remains a top concern with single-family home prices reaching $550,000 on average, amongst the highest in Alaska. At the same time, our senior population (the fastest-growing demographic in Juneau!) is choosing to age-in-place, limiting the available housing supply for younger families. We have heard from local agencies providing affordable housing assistance for low and moderate-income (LMI) residents that they have long wait lists of qualified households who need affordable housing but cannot access it due to limited supply.
Strategies to encourage the construction of more affordable housing is key for the future stability and growth of our economy. Community Land Trust (CLT) housing offer Juneau another tool to address our housing affordability crisis while maintaining community control over development. CLTs are nonprofit, community-based organizations specifically designed to provide affordable housing in perpetuity. The key innovation is that the trust owns the land while residents own the buildings on that land. Through 99-year renewable ground leases, CLTs create a dual ownership model that preserves affordability while building equity for homeowners. In a typical CLT structure:
- The nonprofit trust owns the land permanently.
- Homeowners purchase the buildings and pay low fees to access the land.
- Resale prices are capped to maintain affordability for future buyers.
- The trust has right of first refusal on all sales.
We are inviting feedback from community members! Please send us an email if you have experience with CLTs or would like to engage with JEDC on this important work.

Learn more about the CLT model and its applicability to our region via the Northwest Community Land Trust Coalition (NWCLTC), which supports and enhances the activities of CLTs based in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Alaska and Hawai'i. | | | It's a wrap! 2025 STEM Summer Camps
JEDC’s STEM Camps have been an integral part of Juneau’s summer youth activities for over fifteen years. Our dedicated team provides an exciting and enriching environment where young students can explore STEM through hands-on projects, real-world challenges, and team-based learning. Designed to spark curiosity and build confidence, our camps help develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and technical skills while nurturing creativity and collaboration. This summer, JEDC hosted sixteen high-quality camp experiences for 300+ Juneau youth, our highest turnout ever! Most camps were LEGO robotics-based and augmented by supporting STEM activities. We also hosted Trades Camp and (new) Entrepreneurship Camp this year. These included:
- LEGO Robotics Explore (grades 1-4)
- LEGO Robotics Challenge (grades 4-8)
- Girls Robotics Camp (grades 4-8)
- FIRST LEGO League Tips/Introduction to Python (grades 5-8)
- 3D Design and Print Camp (grades 6-10)
- Technical Trades Camp (grades 8-11)
- Entrepreneurship Camp (grades 6-8)
| | A special thanks to our many sponsors and partners! With generous support from various businesses and community organizations, we are able to provide a "Pay-As-You-Choose" model, making these camps more easily accessible to everyone in tour community. | | Program Funders and Title Sponsors | | Entrepreneurship Camp Sponsors | | Trades Camp Sponsors and Operational Partners | | |
"In reflecting on my time at JEDC as a JV, I am left with so much gratitude and thankfulness for the memories I have made and the things I have gotten to experience. FIRST will have a lasting impact on how I view talent development, nonprofit work, education, and what it means to meet people where they are. Throughout this year, I have been present to a community and culture unlike any I have felt before. Southeast Alaska and the FIRST Community have truly shaped my experience of this year in ways I can't even begin to explain. The JV experience is framed around the cornerstones of Community, Simple Living, Spirituality, and Social/Ecological Justice. The FIRST program and JEDC have allowed me to explore what those core values mean to me in a professional setting. This JV year is something I will not soon forget, and while my time as a JV and at JEDC may be concluding, I am filled with a humble gratitude for the experience which I have been given through these past 12 months to grow, understand, and be present to the community that is JEDC, FIRST, Juneau, and Southeast Alaska." - Mitchell Sporing, JEDC 2024-25 Jesuit Volunteer
| | |
For the last year, JEDC has hosted Mitchell 'Mitch' Sporing, a volunteer from Jesuit Volunteer Corps Northwest, an AmeriCorps program. As our Youth Robotics & STEM Coordinator, he was integral in helping plan and organize our K-12 LEGO robotics tournaments throughout the state, assist with new team recruitment, run several summer STEM camps and events, and provide ongoing support to individual coaches and their teams.
As Mitch wraps up his year of service at JEDC, we thank him for his dedication and support to our community. Thank you, Mitch!
"Excited, energetic, and effective - those are the words I would use to characterize Mitch's year of service at JEDC. Mitch was an amazingly fast learner and he stayed about three steps ahead of me all year long, but also asked questions and communicated very well so that we worked great as a team. It was a bit like working with the Energizer Bunny, but he got amazing things accomplished this year and had a tremendous impact on kids, coaches, and the JEDC STEM program. Fortunately for us, he's staying to work for a Juneau engineering firm so we expect to be seeing him at upcoming Juneau events." - Alyson Cooper, FSTEM Program Manager

| | | JEDC Economic Presentations | | |
JEDC hopes to increase awareness and engage citizens in local and regional economic issues.
In addition to our many research and survey efforts, we are pleased to give presentations to business and community groups on the state of Juneau's economy.
Available presentation topics include:
-
Juneau Economic Indicators: A high-level overview of Juneau’s economy, including data on employment & earnings, demographics, housing, education, major industries, and cost of living.
-
Juneau’s Changing Demographics: A detailed look at Juneau’s changing population dynamics, exploration of factors underlying these changes, and the potential economic implications of recent shifts toward an older, less fertile population.
-
Miner and Seasonal Worker Surveys Results: An overview of results regarding surveys sent to two groups: miners at Green’s Creek & Kensington Mine and seasonal workers who come to Juneau for summer employment. These groups were surveyed on their satisfaction with Juneau’s amenities and cost of living to help us understand the factors behind workers’ decisions to not live in Juneau full-time.
-
Juneau’s Housing Crisis: Analyzing the factors behind Juneau’s lack of affordable housing & potential economic impacts and examining recent trends around decreasing housing affordability for renters & potential homebuyers.
If you would like to schedule a presentation, please contact Daniel at dking@jedc.org.
