| | 2025 Entrepreneurship Camp Recap | | |
This past week we held the inaugural Entrepreneurship Camp, sponsored by Juneau Chamber of Commerce, Junior Achievement of Alaska, and JEDC! Campers spent the week developing a business plan and product to then compete in a shark tank style event! Students took their ideas and pitched them to local entrepreneurs and business people from the Juneau Area.
There were several creative ideas including a more productive gold panning, healthier energy drinks, novel condiment dispenser, messy-less way to carry pet treats, better needle threading, convenient solution to a dead battery, healthier pet snacks, and improved art skills development
We would like to thank our Judges, Alicia Smith with Imagination Station, Assembly member and entrepreneur Wade Bryson and Executive Director of the Juneau Chamber of Commerce Wayne Stevens for their support and help in making this an amazing day!

Monday focused on Diesel Mechanics and Welding, Tuesday centered around Maritime Industries and Heavy Equipment, Power and Energy on Wednesday, Mining on Thursday and Friday concluding with applications in Plumbing and Construction Industries! SEARHC’s history is one of resilience, innovation, and community collaboration. What began as a response to the unique healthcare needs of Alaska’s remote and diverse populations has evolved into a model of integrated care that encompasses medical, dental, behavioral health, and community-based services.

| | | Juneau Nonresident Miners Satisfaction Survey | | | | |
Juneau strives to be an attractive community for a skilled, educated, and creative workforce to call home. JEDC recently surveyed nonresident workers at our two large mines, asking questions about their decision to work in Juneau but also maintain their permanent home outside of Juneau.
Juneau relies on a significant number of nonresident workers (Figure 1), and the share of nonresident workers has been slowly increasing among all industries in Juneau. This indicates an increasing reliance on non-local labor, which has a negative economic impact due to less wages being re-circulated within the local Juneau economy.

| | Research Note on Sales Tax and Property Tax | | | | |
Our community requires and expects a certain level of services from local government. To pay for those desired services, CBJ collects fees, revenues, and taxes. As the community considers potential changes to Sales Tax and Property Tax, these changes will have different impacts not only on CBJ income, but also on who pays any levied taxes. Since many Juneau citizens find some dimensions of Juneau difficult to afford, we have examined the impacts of changes in economic burden in the form of a sales tax on Juneau residents. Depending on how sales tax and property tax are structured, those impacts will vary by various demographics like age, income, and family size.
In this report, JEDC examined the current state of sales and property tax burdens for Juneau households alongside the potential ramifications of proposed ballot initiatives related to sales tax and property tax.
