For the fifth consecutive year, Juneau has experienced a decline in its population across the 0-19, 20-39, and 40-59 age groups, while the 60+ age group has seen an increase. This ongoing trend reflects an aging demographic in the region. Notably, Juneau's median age rose from 39.9 in 2023 to 40.3 in 2024, significantly higher than the state average of 36.9 years for 2024.
The decline in Juneau's population can largely be attributed to a persistent decrease in natural increase, coupled with net out-migration in most years. In a development, 2022 marked the first year on record where the number of residents aged 60 and older surpassed those in the 0-19 age group, highlighting a significant demographic shift over the past decade. Back in 2014, there were nearly 3,000 more individuals aged 0-19 than those aged 60 or older.
