Juneau Economic Development Council NEWS | May 2025 | | Juneau Nonresident Miners Satisfaction Survey | | | | |
JEDC recently surveyed nonresident workers at our two large mines, asking questions about their decision to work in Juneau but also maintain their permanent home outside of Juneau.
The survey findings revealed challenges and priorities influencing nonresident miners’
decisions to maintain permanent residences elsewhere.
Juneau relies on a significant number of nonresident workers (Figure 1), and the share of nonresident workers has been slowly increasing among all industries in Juneau. This indicates an increasing reliance on non-local labor, which has a negative economic impact due to less wages being re-circulated within the local Juneau economy.

Have your residence or place of business been impacted by the 2024 Mendenhall Glacier Outburst Flood? Our hearts go out to everyone affected, and we want you to know that your experience matters deeply to us. Earlier this month, we mailed a postcard containing a survey link to 290 households. This survey will help us capture important economic impacts caused by the flooding.
We are still seeking responses to help us capture your feedback. If you have not received your postcard or misplaced it please contact us at the link below.

The Juneau Economic Development Council (JEDC), with the support of a record breaking 78 sponsors led by SEARHC and Alaska Airlines, put on the 15th Juneau Maritime Festival on May 3rd.
Despite the "maritime" weather, 106 vendors and thousands of locals showed up to celebrate our shared history, culture, and commerce that links us to the sea. The crowd was able to enjoy free music on the

mainstage by JAMM, Vox Borealis, The Rain Dogs, and Navy Band Northwest and a rousing Tug-of-War contest on the sea walk that ended with the defending champion US Coast Guard keeping the celebrated trophy. Harbor cruises and a beer garden ensured that there was something for everyone on this festive day.
Thanks to all sponsors, vendors, volunteers, entertainers, and attendees for making this a most successful event!
