How did we go so quickly from April showers to pumpkin spice? Jay and I are now in a mad scramble to do the fall cleanup on the home front, before I need earmuffs. As I’m dragging patio furniture and hoses inside, I have so many ideas for next month’s newsletter relating to organization. But for now we’ll spend as many daylight hours that we can getting ready for winter. My big thought this month is that I love my small town connections. Last week I went to the wake and celebration of life for a longtime pal of mine from Westminster, Stanley Skamarycz. When I saw that Stan died, my legitimate immediate reaction was that I just assumed Stan would live forever. READ MORE

We monitor the weather fairly closely at our house, because among other things (no central A/C but lots of skylights open all summer), it’s been very hard to keep the grass cut this summer. It seems like all it does is rain, and then, while waiting for the grass to dry out, it rains again. So, we’ve had a lot of thunderstorm warnings, a tornado warning or two, and continual forecasts for rain. After a while you become immune to the warnings, and that’s what happened to us. READ MORE

We recently attended the grand opening of the new Central Massachusetts Veterans Treatment Court, held at the Gardner District Courthouse. Invited to this grand opening were many local and statewide political figures, including our State Representative, Kim Ferguson, Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangelidis, and many more. We weren’t invited, because seats were scarce, but we showed up anyway. We made our way in to the Gardner District Court chambers because our oldest son, Jay Marshall Shenk, now an Assistant District Attorney, was involved in setting up this new Veterans Treatment Court. Jay typically starts the state of the real estate market story and I add some local details, or I write it from a personal perspective, but this month is a 50/50 effort. Real estate has been such a hot topic of conversation over the past few months and years because it’s ever changing. We all need housing of some sort, and the buying and selling of homes throughout Covid and continuing now, is a bit like the Wild West. READ MORE

Every year there are certain things we make sure to do, some of which aren’t particularly enjoyable–taxes, for instance, head that list. But as a completely opposite counterpoint, we also make sure to attend the Monadnock Open Studio Art Tour, which has proven to be, year after year, enjoyable, educational, inspiring, and absolutely free.*Unless we buy something, and it’s usually a landscape painting, like the one pictured here from last year's visit. Everyone likes something for free! In this case I have Oakmont preferred student parking passes for October and November, up for grabs. I bought them at the Ashburnham Westminster Foundation for Academic Excellence fundraiser last year, to give them away--my youngest turns 21 next week, so I definitely do not have a need to park in the Oakmont Faculty Lot. Want one? Message me here! *There's another free offer in this month's Newsletter Introduction, so don't miss reading that.

A Night for Excellence is the Ashburnham Westminster Foundation for Academic Excellence annual fundraising event. Each year parents, faculty, staff, and the community gather for a evening of hors d’oeuvres, drinks, live music, and a buffet dinner. We hold three auctions during the event, all with amazing items kindly donated to us: Raffles, a Silent auction and a Live auction. Our entertaining Live auction sees members of the community vying for hot-ticket items like sporting event tickets, vacation home rentals, and other once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. All are invited to socialize while supporting academic excellence in our schools. We always look forward to seeing you. Tickets are available now, $75 per person, or reserve a table for $750. We recently spent a few hours with a friend of ours, touring her newly-constructed very small house. The tour was fast, for obvious reasons, but it was a pleasant visit and we learned a lot about tiny houses, and how she successfully project managed and helped build hers. The home we visited has an 16’ x 24’ footprint, with a storage loft on the second floor, for a total of 500 square feet. READ MORE

SOLD: 124 Worcester Road, Westminster! 🎉 I sold this property in early 2022, and late summer 2023 the buyer (now seller) approached me to do it again. They had made some fantastic improvements (beautiful new Kitchen, new oil tank, new well pump, etc.~~some pretty and some more-functional-than-pretty, but all good choices in my book). Taking the improvements in to consideration, we listed the property for $599,900 and had a full weekend of open houses and showings, with 40+ sets of buyers through. 124 Worcester Road, and it's beautiful surroundings and view, sold last week for $625,000 to the nicest buyers, 5 chickens included!~ Little funny thing is I arrived at the final walk through and found a piece of furniture had been delivered. It was addressed to 'greg, 124 Worcester Road'. Welcome to small town living Greg and Marion! LEARN MORE | |
