As we near the end of our fiscal year, we reflect on the powerful stories we have shared over the past twelve months. You read about married couples seeking therapy to mend their relationships, older adults searching for affordable housing, single mothers relying on our food pantry to feed their families, and individuals with disabilities gaining valuable job experience through our programs. It is humbling to witness the hardships faced by so many in our community and an incredible honor to support them through their journeys. This is the heart of JFCS: opening our doors to anyone in need and walking alongside them toward a brighter, more hopeful future.

While JFCS is built on four core pillars of service (as highlighted in the header each month), we do not view them as separate silos. Each department brings its own area of expertise, but our agency operates as a unified whole, working collaboratively to ensure that every client is aware of the full range of support we offer. Often, individuals come to us seeking help in one area, only to discover that JFCS can support them in many more ways. This is by design and not by chance. Every member of our staff is trained to recognize needs beyond the initial request and to connect clients with the additional resources that can truly change their lives.

This experience is a powerful example of how JFCS provides support that extends far beyond a single service. Each year, we serve hundreds of families through our Corner Market Food Pantry. At a recent visit, one client shared with a pantry staff member her growing concern about her mother’s declining health. The staff member immediately suggested she reach out to our Older Adults department to explore possible resources. On her next pantry visit, the client returned with an update and deep gratitude. She explained how much her mother’s JFCS care manager had already helped, including guiding her through applications for critical government assistance—most notably, securing healthcare through Medicaid. Touched by the compassion and support her family had received, the client gave the pantry worker a heartfelt hug and a sincere “thank you.”

For our clients, it is an incredible relief to know that JFCS genuinely cares about their well-being. Sometimes, just five minutes with a staff member is enough to show them that they are not alone and that JFCS will do everything possible to help turn today’s struggles into a brighter tomorrow.

Dear JFCS Family,

As my retirement quickly approaches, I pen my last letter to you as CEO of JFCS.

To all of you --- clients, donors, volunteers, leadership and staff, these last 11 plus years have been the greatest honor of my career. Reading the words above, what is abundantly clear is that the work of JFCS is gritty, organic, and the most basic of service work as we, quite literally, help people have better, happier, healthier, and more fulfilling lives amidst unpredictable crisis, illness, and the overall havoc that happens to humans every day. For me, a “seasoned” social worker and grateful resident of our incredible Northern New Jersey Jewish community, it has been a dream job to have participated in the growth and development of this organization and of its exemplary staff and volunteer teams. I have derived immense pride and strength from the camaraderie, high intellect, and sheer passion of the people who work so hard to make JFCS tick. I will forever be grateful to all of you.

So, I leave with full confidence that my successor, Evan Hochberg, will lead these incredible JFCS staff and volunteer teams forward, addressing the ever-evolving mental health and social service challenges of our community far into the future.

With deep gratitude and abundant hope,

Susan
