Digital World War II Artifacts Collection
On August 2, 1943, Lieutenant John F. Kennedy's patrol torpedo boat (PT 109) was struck by a Japanese destroyer, the Amagiri. Hailed a hero for his efforts to secure the rescue of his crew, Kennedy claimed, "It was involuntary. They sunk my boat." In 1968, crewman Charles Harris donated this tattered flag, removed from the boat in July 1943, to the Library. View the flag and related WWII artifacts on our website.

Your students can make their own popsicle stick flag after learning about the historic flag from the PT 109 and explore the importance and symbolism of another prominent flag at the Library.
