MoMA (New York, NY)
MoMA presents a centennial selection of hidden treasures, most of them in archival 35mm prints, from the Shochiku film studio that has provided such masterpieces as Yashuzirō Ozu’s Tokyo Story, Keisuke Kinoshita’s Ballad of Narayama, Nagisa Oshima’s Cruel Story of Youth, and Masaki Kobayashi’s Harakiri. This exhibition goes beyond these perennial favorites to deepen our appreciation of the history of Japanese cinema, allowing us to revel in newfound discoveries Opening on June 10 with the North American premiere 4K restoration of Masahiro Shinoda’s Demon Pond (1979).This event is supported through the Japan Foundation.

Portland Japanese Garden (Portland, OR)
Gifts from Japan illuminates the unique origin stories of many flowers that are now widely presumed native to the United States. The exhibition invites visitors into an immersive journey of changing cultures and horticultural technologies through art at the turn of the century. This exhibition is supported through CGP 2021 Relief Grant for Japan America Societies and Japan.

The Japan-U.S. Science Communication & Policy Fellowship Network Program brings together early-career scientists from Japan and the U.S. to engage in bilateral training and exchange for effective communication towards strategic collaboration with policymakers. Selected Fellows will participate in a year-long cohort experience and receive training to communicate science-informed policy to a wide audience. Japanese Arts & Culture Film Series: Three Cinematic Visionaries, a free public screening and audience discussion series will focus on iconic works by Yasujirō Ozu (1903-1963), Akira Kurosawa (1910-1988), and Katsuhiro Otomo (born 1954).This three-month film series was generously co-funded by a grant from The Japan Foundation, NY. All film presentations are free, but due to limited seating, require advanced registration.

Outlook Hill, Governors Island (New York, NY)
Join JPA's second performance since the summer of 2019 of “Gujo Odori” and “Nishimonai Bon Odori,” two of the Big Three Bon Odori dances of Japan on top of Outlook Hill on Governors Island. This FREE outdoor event will be a spectacular view of Japanese dances on top of the Hill, with the Statue of Liberty in the background. This event is supported through the JFNY Grant for Arts & Culture.

Takashi Harada, The Ondes Martenot with special guests: Mark Robson, piano; Kojiro Umezaki, shakuhachi; Maggie Parkins, cello. Mr. Takashi Harada is the best known Ondist in Japan, and one of the few masters of this unique instrument in the world. Robson and Harada are longtime friends, having met as students at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris. Mr. Umezaki has long been a proponent of Japanese traditional and contemporary music for the shakuhachi, and is well known as a founding member of The Silk Road Ensemble. This event is supported through the Performing Arts Japan Program.

Epsilon Spires (Brattleboro, VT)
Yosuke Fujita, a sound Artist, organist and composer based in Japan will perform as FUJI||||||||||TA at the multidisciplinary arts venue Epsilon Spires in Brattleboro, Vermont. This performance will feature a hand-fabricated pipe organ with 11 pipes and no keyboard which he based on the traditional Japanese musical concept of gagaku. This event is supported through the JFNY Grant for Arts & Culture.
